Abstract
Chapter I

Introduction

It is apparent that there exists a plethora of research concerning the effects of

caffeine and its dosage on students physiology, cognitive, and behavioral processes

and performance task outcomes, all of which could potentially impact on education

and learning. Numerous studies have investigated the effects of caffeine ingestion on

visual attention. EFSA evaluated a significant number of studies and concluded that

caffeine increases both selective attention (focusing on the relevant stimulus) and

sustained attention (maintaining focused attention over an extended period of

time). Based on this evaluation, EFSA concluded that a 75mg serving of caffeine had

been demonstrated to increase attention. Higher caffeine intakes do not necessarily

result in additional increases in alertness2-4. It is thought that the relationship

between the level of arousal and task performance follows an inverted U-curve, i.e.

poor performance can occur due to both under- and over-arousal. A review

published in 2012 suggests that caffeine improves performance on both simple and

complex attention tasks, concluding that caffeine has clear beneficial effects on

attention, and that these effects are even more widespread than previously

assumed.
In a study comparing the effects of caffeine on attention in non-habitual and

habitual caffeine consumers, the effects were dose-dependent in non-habitual

caffeine consumers, and the best results for visual attention were achieved with

200mg of caffeine. Another study found that in habitual consumers, the amount

required to enhance both vigilance and visual attention was higher, i.e. 400mg.

(Coffee and Health, 2019)

The information above is showing that it is not only a bad effects of coffee or

categorized as unhealthy living of being a coffee lover as it brings series of good

effects that may benefits to an individual. There are series of people who really love

of drinking coffee, young and old, men and women. Nowadays that it is also kicking

a market sales in the market world because of some businesses that were

established, millenials like highs students are now fond of drinking coffee as they

were always in their illusion of getting out and drink a cup of coffee in the famous

Starbucks . Not only that, knowing also that there are loada activity in school, high

school students were not able to prevent in taking extra time to complete academic

tasks resulting to some sleepless night. Coffee had been an instrument for them to

stay awake and do their school tasks.

Conducting this study about the perceived effects of coffee and the high school metal

alertness will help the students to be aware on the posible effects of continue taking
coffee and the possible advantages and disadvantages of it. It has proven that there

is really an effect of caffeine to the mental alertness of human. The coffee effects in

human health in terms of what could be the side effect of too much drink of it and

having your mind alert is not been studied. The perceived effects of it and the high

school mental alertness data is not sufficient. Despite clear increases in

physiological arousal, exercise did not improve memory performance compared to a

stretching control condition. These study suggest that caffeine has a specific benefit

for memory. These study have real-world implications for students school activities.
Background of the Study

Senior high school students have a lot on their plates. From class lectures to exams

and all of the not taking in between, their brains work hard throughout the day.

Academic responsibilities can take a toll on energy levels, hindering students’

abilities to focus in class, retain important information and perform well on exams

and assignments. However, students can support themselves and enhance your

school performance with a gourmet coffee bar that will keep your mind alert. Coffee

can significantly boost academic performance by increasing energy levels,

improving focus and enhancing cognitive abilities. This delectable beverage can fuel

students and help them achieve their most demanding goals. According to coffee

drinking statistics, approximately 92% of high school students report drinking

coffee on a regular basis.

The demands on coffee industry as shown in the business world is significant that

benefits also students, the reason why the researchers came up with this study is

primarily to identify the perceived effects of drinking to high school students mental

alertness. The students activity in school and other stress in mind they have is the

main reason that some of them is having sleepless night and tends to rely on

drinking coffee just to stay active and maybe complete what they are doing. This
study also wants to know if the excessive habit of drinking coffee is showing any

effects of the mental alertness of the students. To compare maybe of there is any

difference on a students who are not drinking coffee and those students who are

fond of drinking coffee , if they're mental alertness is significantly difference. When

it comes to caffeine and studying, coffee may help students focus and study more

efficiently. Since it makes people more alert and can increase dopamine levels, it’s a

great beverage to have while reading lengthy textbooks or reviewing lecture notes.

According to (American Vending, Inc.,2023), when a person drinks coffee, caffeine

prevents them from feeling tired. This is because it blocks adenosine, a substance

the body naturally makes, from triggering fatigue. It also interacts with dopamine,

the brain’s mood-regulating neurotransmitter, to stimulate the parts of the nervous

system regulated by the hypothalamus and improve cognitive function. Coffee can

boost memory. Studies have shown that individuals remember more information

after drinking coffee. However, studies on this topic have had mixed results. Some

researchers claim that coffee has no effect on memory while others claim that it

significantly affects short-term and long-term memory.

Many students struggle to perform well on exams in the early morning. Although

students drink caffeinated beverages to feel more awake, it is unclear whether these
actually improve performance. After consuming coffee (caffeinated or

decaffeinated), students completed implicit and explicit memory tasks in the early

morning and late afternoon.

A secondary goal of the study was to consider the effect of caffeine on two different

forms of memory, the deliberate recall of information (explicit memory) and the

unintentional recall of previously learned information (implicit memory). Previous

research suggests that while explicit memory scores are lower in young adults in the

morning compared to the afternoon, priming scores actually increase during this

period of low arousal, suggesting that explicit and implicit memory may be

moderated differently by physiological arousal (May et al., 2005; Rowe et al., 2006).
Theoretical Framework

This study aims to identify the perceived effects of drinking coffee to senior high

school student’s mental alertness; this will be sustained by the theory and data that

will sustain the present study.

Theories of Vigilance and the Prospect of Cognitive Restoration

In modern psychology, vigilance, also termed sustained concentration, is defined as

the ability to maintain concentrated attention over prolonged periods of time.

During this time, the person attempts to detect the appearance of a particular target

stimulus. The individual watches for a signal stimulus that may occur at an unknown

time. The study of vigilance has expanded since the 1940s mainly due to the

increased interaction of people with machines for applications involving monitoring

and detection of rare events and weak signals. Such applications include air traffic

control, inspection and quality control, automated navigation, military and border

surveillance, and lifeguarding.(Daryll, S. 2018)

In the relevance of the said theory to the study, somehow this is not a focus of the

mental alertness of the senior high school students as it focus on the perceived

effects of drinking coffee to the mental alertness. The theory mainly focus on the

sustained concentration wherein the alertness of mind is not about the sustained
concentration but about their ability to stay focus, understand and process the

information to process details and responds. The theory states also that sustained

focus that is related to the cognitive skills of an individual also proves that mental

alertness of individual is their ability to use their cognitive skills and process

information.

Theories of Biological Basis of Addiction

According to a recent study published by the American Academy of Pediatrics,

nearly three-fourths (75%) of children, teens, and young adults use it daily too—in

the form of soda, coffee, and energy drinks.Caffeine is a drug—a stimulant drug, to

be exact. It is even possible to be physically dependent on it—which means that a

person who is used to drinking lots of caffeinated beverages can experience

withdrawal symptoms if they quit.

Caffeine being the most widely used psychotropic drug in the United

States.Caffeine effects once intake by coffee lover is somehow showing or giving

sustained information about the present study on what could be the perceived

effects of drinking coffee among the senior high school students. Caffeine content

of various products that could really be an effect of being mentally alert by an

individual. Caffeine has a perk-up effect because it blocks a brain chemical,

adenosine, which causes sleepiness. The theory information on it's proven effects
and the study purpose in identifying the effects of it to the senior high school

mental alertness shows relativity in terms of being active and having sleepless

night even the individual really wants to sleep.

Effects of Caffeine on Cognitive Performance, Mood, and Alertness in Sleep-

Deprived Humans

The results of the present study would seem to indicate that caffeine can be an ideal

stimulant for use during human performance and other operations when

performance declines secondary to sleep disruption and sleep fragmentation. Doses

of 600 mg are needed to reverse severely degraded performance as a result of long

periods of sleep deprivation. Presumably, lower doses (200–400 mg) would be

effective in ameliorating the changes caused by shorter periods of deprivation.Given

the legal and social acceptance of caffeine, and its low abuse potential, caffeine

tablets (200 mg/tablet) should be included in food rations.

Use of caffeine should be restricted to special situations when sleep has been

unusually disrupted and for the benefit of temporarily (10–12 h) restoring alertness

and sustaining performance during critical periods. Finally, although caffeine can

temporarily sustain performance during continuous operations, it should be

emphasized that no drug can substitute for adequate sleep.(David, P.,it al, 2018)

Foreign Literature

According (Stacy, L., 2018), caffeine is the most widely used drug in the world,

consumed by some 80 percent of American adults every day. It's probably safe to

say that caffeine's most popular vehicle, coffee, is a mainstay for many psychology

grad students. A 2012 survey conducted on behalf of Dunkin' Donuts and

CareerBuilder showed that scientists drink more coffee than any other professional

group except food workers.Caffeine is chemically similar to the neuromodulator

adenosine, which accumulates through the day and induces drowsiness for sleeping

at night. When we consume caffeine, it binds to adenosine receptors in the brain,

blocking the effects of adenosine, with the side benefit of allowing dopamine to flow

more freely. That can bring on feelings of well-being, energy and alertness.

Caffeine Intake and Mental Health in College Students

The effect of caffeine on the human body, both short-term and long-term, has been

studied in great depth, particularly its association with psychiatric disorders. This

study aims to investigate whether there is a correlation between caffeine intake and

anxiety and depression among college students. (Raphael, B., etc al,2021)

Local Literature

EFFECTS OF AMOUNT OF CAFFEINE LEVELS ON THE TEST SCORE OF COLLEGE

STUDENTS

Caffeine has been a major part of students' lives. Between exams, homework, and

socializing, students have an increasing demand for caffeinated products. Energy

drinks, coffee, and tea can be seen in the hands of most students in Silliman

University as they go to class, study during their vacant hours or hang out in the

areas of Dumaguete City. This research focuses on the perceptions of different types

of caffeinated beverages among the college student demographic, main types

including energy drinks, coffee, and tea. The research also covers the frequency of

caffeine intake among Silliman University college students. their daily expenditures

on caffeine, and the most popular circumstances in which college students consume

caffeine, and also whether there is a "placebo effect" on students upon consuming

caffeine in order to boost performance in their academic performance. The main

objectives of this study are: (1) to research the changes and results of different types

of caffeine intake among the college student population, this includes energy drinks,

soft drinks, coffee, and tea. (2) To focus on the frequency of the amount of caffeine

intake for each type of caffeine among college students in Silliman University, and

(3) compare the test results based after serving them with different caffeine type.

(4) The perceived benefits and disadvantages of drinking each type of caffeine are

also of interest in this research study. For each type and for each circumstance, the

study will research the frequency of consumption and also report differences of

academic performances on the coffee drinkers versus non-coffee drinkers, who

excel on their academics as well. But there are health concerns in this study.

Especially to those students who are not under the influence of caffeine in their

lifetime. Which is why the researchers are gathering data from blood pressure to a

series to surveys and consent forms in order to be secure into their identity and

ethical in this study. 3 The researcher is able to gather the data based on the
different levels of caffeine consumed on the participants. The Average of Test Scores

34.89% on energy drinks, which is higher than coffee and tea, 34.66% on coffee

drinks, and the lowest is 30.44% on tea. According to the survey results, coffee is the

most preferred caffeinated drink by the college students with the highest

percentage of 86.67 %. This is because, the caffeine in coffee is a mild stimulant that

can in many ways help increases the capacity to study. It can positively affect overall

mood, enhance alertness and performance while eventually, thereby aiding learning

abilities. 80 % of college students says that they are immune to the possible effects

when taking a caffeine beverage. But other students still experience feelings of

nervousness, tremors, flushed appearance, elevated temperature, and palpitations.

66.67 % of college students needs caffeine as their stimulant to start their day. 40%

of the students who took this survey would most likely take a caffeinated drink

every 1-3 times a week. And 60% of them would take an 8 oz of caffeine to start

their day or to start studying. 40% of the students would most likely to drink

caffeine in the evening for studying for their exams and 80% of them says that it

helps them to focus on their study handouts. 4(John,L ,et al,2018)

Chapter III

Methodology

This chapter shows the methodology of this study. It includes the research design,

research locale, research instrument, sampling procedure, data gathering

procedure, and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This study will be conducted using a quantitative and descriptive research

design. A quantitative and descriptive research strategy reveals an existing

phenomenon in which the data can be modified and can only be determined by

how, what, or when it occurred. (McCombes, 2019).

This research design was chosen to meet the objectives of the study toidentify the

perceived effects of drinking coffee to the mental alertness of senior high students.

This will show in their academic performance of there is any effects and their ability

to stay focus.
Research Sample

The researcher used stratified random sampling by equally allocating

classroom/section. The study was conducted in St. Dominic College of Asia which is

located in Bacoor City province of Cavite. The researcher involves the use of survey

questionnaires for data gathering. The study was composed of participants which

are all students. The sample population is limited among Grade 12 HUMSS students

of St. Dominic College of Asia. The researcher distributed the survey questionnaire

thorough online.

Research Instrument

The research instrument in this study is an adapted-intrinsic motivation

standardized questionnaire developed and validated by Ryan and Deci (2002). The

Intrinsic Motivation Questionnaire is a multidimensional survey device intended to

assess participants' subjective experiences related to a target activity. It is providing

constructive criticism and allowing students to apply feedback that increases the

intrinsic motivation to master a concept. Use peer feedback, rubrics, or student

conferences in a lesson to boost mastery. The research instrument will be subjected

to content and face validation by the tool validators assigned by the school after
review and approval of the research proposal by the members and chairperson of

the Thesis Review Panel.

Data Gathering Procedure

The data was collected by using the survey questionnaire distributed to the students

at Saint Paul University in Dumaguete, Philippines; the grade 11 students will stand

as the participants of this study. The flow of the survey questions was based on the

adopted Ryan and Deci intrinsic questionnaire. This study used systematic analyses

to identify the effects of drinking coffee to senior high school mental alertness; the

type of survey that the researcher used was a semi-structured survey that was

adapted from Ryan and Deci's intrinsic questionnaire. This type of survey was the

best to use for establishing rapport and producing good data. The researcher

followed the survey procedure. The survey was divided into two phases and

different parts. The survey lasted for three (3) weeks before the data was

completely gathered.

Data Analysis

For the first statement of the problem, the researchers used the percentage method

to determine the frequency and percentage of the participant’s profile, namely: age,
gender, profession, and educational attainment and preferred method of ordering

and delivery.

For the second statement of the problem, Mean and Average Mean were computed

per variable to determine the level of satisfaction of the participants in terms of

reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy and tangible food delivery services.

For the third statement of the problem, t-test was used to determine if there’s a

significant difference in customer satisfaction when grouped according to gender. f-

test (ANOVA) or Analysis of Variance was used to determine the significant

difference in the learning style and academic performance of elementary students.

For the 4th statement of the problem, recommendations were formulated based on

the results of the study.

Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendation

Summary

This study was conducted to determine the perceived effects of drinking

coffee to the senior high school students mental alertness. The study is a descriptive

type of research. To take part in the survey, 16 senior high school students from the

HUMSS strand who are drinking coffee were chosen. This study used an adapted-

intrinsic motivation standardized questionnaire developed and validated by Ryan

and Deci (2002). The Intrinsic Motivation Questionnaire is a multidimensional

survey device intended to assess participants' subjective experiences related to a

target activity, and data was collected using a Google form that was constructed

with appropriate statistical tools and interpretation.

According to the study's findings 58% of the students are drinking coffee

everyday and they are taking it at least 1 cup per day. Most of the respondents

confirmed that drinking coffee is not affecting their mental alertness and instead

they are experiencing headache after drinking coffee. The study also found out that
it is not also helping the senior high school concentration at all. Drinking coffee does

not improve their memory and based on their responses caffeinated products and

drinking is not helping instead giving possible health problems.

Conclusion

The framework and information gathered allowed the researchers to

respond to the questions presented in the statement of the problem regarding the

perceived effects of drinking coffee to senior high school students mental alertness.

The findings of the investigation led to the following conclusions:

The collected demographic profile of the participants about their ages

revealed that 19 years old are the majority among the participants. This indicates

that 19 years old are most likely to be a coffee lover and confirmed the perceived

effects of coffee to the mental alertness of them as respondents. The gathered data

in the survey questionnaire shows also that drinking habit of the respondents of the

caffeinated products and coffee and the location they preferred to drink it.

The gathered data in the perceived effects of drinking coffee to senior high

school mental alertness showed that there is no significant effects in terms of

concentration as they may be feeling normal and use their concentration whether

not drinking coffee or after drinking coffee. Additionally, the respondents confirmed
that there is no significant effects also of drinking coffee to their mental alertness as

for them that they are still be able to stay focus and alert and not rely on the

caffeinated products and drinking coffee.

In conclusion of this study findings that there is no perceived effects of

drinking coffee to the senior high school mental alertness and that their cognitive

skills are working fine whether drinking coffee or not. Therefore, the concerned as

showed in the findings that they experienced headache after drinking coffee should

also be addressed instead. A moderate intake of coffee may enhance weight loss,

cognitive function, and alertness.

Recommendation

The following suggestions were made with a focus on the perceived effects of

drinking coffee to the senior high school mental alertness:

For senior high school students, a good mental alertness and concentration

or having their cognitive works despite of loaded tasks at school and in their house,

they shouldn't relay on any caffeinated and other commercial products that offers to

boost their mind performance as those may bring side effects in their health. They

should know the advantages and advantages of taking those commercial products.
For coffee lover people with the finding that the researchers gathered the

caffeinated products and drinking coffee may still be good and a stress removal for

some of them but they need to remember to take moderately so that they will be

able to benefit on the good effects of drinking coffee. Too much for everything is not

good especially for the health.

For coffee vendor, coffee shop as a business is great and totally fine as it

really attracts market and to sustain financial income. However, as vendor they also

need to provide cautions in terms of moderation when it comes to their customer

who are addicted in drinking coffee.

For future researchers, the work can be expanded upon by replication and

usage of references. The researchers strongly recommend for the future researchers

or using this study as reference to expand the idea of the study.
