ABSTRACT
This research study aimed to assess the academic performance
of working students at UM Tagum College (UMTC). This study used a
quantitative non-experimental method involving 150 working students
from different courses in UMTC. The overall level of Academic
Performance is moderate. It was observed that Research and School
activities got a high descriptive level while only Examination got a
moderate level. Specific recommendations were suggested to
potentially address the results of this study.

INTRODUCTION
A part-time job requires fewer hours per week than a full-time

job. Given the current economic disposition in the Philippines, more

students have opted to work while attending school. Peteros (2021)

states financial limitations forced students to work. These students

are forced to balance work and school. Students have varied reasons

for working, but the most common reason is payment for their

education (Nonis & Hudson, 2012).

Students have difficulties with studying while working. This is

evident in previous studies. Stern (2014) mentioned that studies are

difficult for working students because of over-loaded school activities.

Muluk (2017) even adds that students who are working part-time job

may have a negative impact on their academic performance. However,

it was found by Furr and Elling (2014) that work had a positive effect

on academic performance for students who work in schools.

Existing literature documented that work's effect on the

students' academic performance may differ depending on specific

parameters. However, no studies have been initiated to investigate

students' academic performance during the Pandemic. Given that the

Pandemic has affected many lives. This prompted the researchers to

conduct this study. This is of urgency because the study will generate

results that can be used to understand the plight of working students

during the Pandemic. Specifically on the academic performance of the

students.

METHODOLOGY

This study is quantitative by nature. It applied the non-

experimental descriptive method of research. Tripodi and Bender

(2010) stated that descriptive studies were designed to observe,

describe, and document aspects of a situation as it occurs typically.

The researchers used a descriptive method to identify working

students' level of academic performance at UM Tagum college. For this

study, the researchers developed a questionnaire that was used to

gather the data.

The study involved 150 working students from UM Tagum

college. It was suggested by Budiu and Moran (2021) that 40

participants is the acceptable sample size for most quantitative

studies. Other studies opted to go beyond this recommended number.

In the case of Muico et al. (2022) with 316 and 133 for Ligan and

Tacadena (2022).

MEAN - This statistical tool was used to determine the level of

academic performance of working students at UMTC.

RESULT AND FINDINGS

Level of Assessing Academic Performance of Working Student

The mean scores for the Academic Performance of Working

Student indicators are shown in Table 1, with an overall mean of 3.39

described as moderate with a standard deviation of 0.61. The cited

overall mean score was derived from the highest to lowest computed

mean scores: 3.55 for research with a standard deviation of 0.70; 3.54

for Exam with a standard deviation of 0.67; and 3.08 for School

Activities with a standard deviation of 0.96.for School Activities with a

standard deviation of 0.96.

School Activities 3.08 0.96 High

Exam 3.54 0.67 Moderate

Research 3.55 0.70 High

Overall 3.39 0.61 Moderate

It is observed that the overall level of assessing the academic

performance of working students at the UM Tagum college. Among all

the indicators, Exam got moderate. Despite the moderate descriptive

level this is borderline to the low descriptive level. This means that

Exam is generally affected by work. This moderate score can be

attributed to the amount of time these working students can devote to

studying. Triventi (2014) mentions that full-time workers tend to have

less time for academic studies and school activities. This leads to a

negative effect on the academic performance of working students.

The overall academic performance of working students is

moderate. This indicates that having work affects the academic

performance. This result is consistent with Becker's (1965) who stated

that working may have a negative impact on academic performance.

Similarly, Kalenkoski et al, (2012) found similar results which show

jobs are a significant impediment to time spent by students to improve

academic performance. The results of this study also conform with

Darolia (2014) who revealed that working students have less time

studying. Since working have reduced time for studying this likely

leads to the low or moderate levels of academic performance.

CONCLUSION

Overall, the level of academic performance of working students

in UMTC is moderate. This means that working student's academic

performance is moderately affected in terms of school activities,

exams, and research. To cope with this problem the following

recommendations were suggested. First, working students should

practice time management to meet the demands of work and school.

Second, a program should be instituted to address this issue on

academic performance of working students. The program can focus on

improving the indicators that got the lowest descriptive level. For this

study, it was Exam. Finally, faculy members can monitor the status of

working students in term of the academic performance of students.
