Sunday, Silliman being one of UCCP
Cosmopolitan Church’s ministry part-
ner in the larger Body of Christ.

We celebrate Silliman Sunday today, from page 1
in the history of both institutions. Aside from the American
Protestant missionaries playing great roles in the establish-
ment of both institutions early on in their respective lives,
both institutions also share a lot of things in common. Of
course both profess the Lordship of the Way, Truth and Life
– Jesus Christ our Savior – as central to their life and min-
istry. Furthermore, both institutions share the same heart in
terms of service or ministry, Silliman having as its primary
ministry the students or academic community not only in
Dumaguete City but all over the world. UCCP Cosmopolitan
Church share in the same ministry in that the church started
as a student church, aptly named the Cosmopolitan Student
Church, from whom notable students then became national
leaders later on in the likes of Senator Jovito Salonga, Pres.
Fidel V. Ramos and many others. Today this ministry con-
tinues on with the ministry to the students here in Manila
through the Ladies dormitory of the church.
The partnership between the two institutions flour-
ished by God’s grace and leading. The first Filipino president
of Silliman came from Cosmopolitan Church in the person
of Ambassador Leopodo Ruiz who was then an Elder of the
church. Later on Dr. Quintin “King” Doromal of Cosmopoli-
tan Church served as president of Silliman, establishing a
stronger relationship between the two institutions. Other
luminaries from Cosmopolitan Church served Silliman and
vice versa. Dr. Angel Alcala, who also became President of
Silliman served as the church as well especially when he
became CHED and DENR Secretary during the time of then
Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos, himself a member of
UCCP Cosmopoli-
tan Church. And of
course Pastors
from Silliman ably
served Cosmopoli-
tan church in the
past as well as to-
day.
We therefore cele-
brate Silliman Sun-
day today, and joins
Silliman University in celebrating her 118th Year this month
of August.
We also welcome all those who passed the halls of
Silliman who are here with us today in our worship service
as we celebrate Silliman Sunday.
