Background of the Study

In the past years, the Philippines experienced numerous fire incidents that caused putting

thousands of people at risk and loss of billions of pesos worth of establishments and properties. Fire

incidents in the Philippines usually happen because of short circuits, overcharged/overheated

appliances, leaving children at home unsupervised, or by pure negligence. And in times of fire incident,

the fire normally spreads throughout the area when come in contact to combustible materials however

it can also travel along through walls via conduction or transferring of heat to thermal conductors (Fire

Protection Online Ltd, n.d.).

To lessen the spreading of the fire, tiles was introduced. Ceramic tile is widely known in the

market as a house decoration used to cover cement floors and walls. Back in time, ceramic tiles were

made using bare hands. With the use of wet clay, ceramic tiles were shaped using a wooden mold then

set aside to let it dry. As time pass by, the process and ingredient in making ceramic tiles improved,

tiles are now made through dry or dust pressing. Having clay as the main ingredient, ceramic tiles are

now made with other ingredients such as sand, feldspar, quartz and water (Edmonds, 2008).

The ability of tile not to get burn easily is because of the components it was made of. One of the

component of ceramic tile is Feldspar. Feldspar is a mineral that makes up over half of the earth’s crust.

In the industry, feldspar has many uses, one of it is fillers in glass and ceramic products. Feldspar are

also used in paints, plastic and rubber (King, 2005).

The application of paint with crushed tiles to the wall could serve as an additional thermal

insulator ability to diminish spreading of fire. According to Awoyera et.al. (2018), the findings show

that the lateralized concreate is able to resist high temperature than the non-lateralized concreate. In the

study, it infers that the ceramic wastes have an ability to increase a material’s thermal resistance.
With the increasing rate of fires in the Philippines, the researchers gathered data to support the

study to find out the feasibility of ceramic tiles mixed with paint to prevent fire from happening. With

the use of ceramic tile which has feldspar as its component, it can be an answer to lessen the number of

fires happening in the Philippines.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the efficiency of powdered ceramic tiles as a thermal insulator.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the preferable amount of powdered ceramic tiles, in grams, needed to be mixed in wall

paint for it to become an effective thermal insulator?

2. How can powderized tiles affect the growth of fire when mixed in wall paint?

3. Is it effective that when you mix powderized tiles in wall paint, the wall paint will become an

effective thermal insulator?

4. What is the significant difference between the wall paint with ceramic tiles and the wall paint

without the ceramic tiles in terms of efficiency?

Significance of the Study

This conducted study would contribute to the following:

 Students and other researchers- The students can use this study as their reference for their own

future study. This will help them for it can be one of their related studies.

 House owners- It would help them to avoid their house from being prone to fire accident. It

would also help the house owner save money from buying other fire retardant product.
 Ceramic tiles making companies- It would help them to modify and improve their product to

become fire resistant. IN result, since households in the Philippines are prone to fire accidents,

this will be a boost to their profit since a lot of people will be encouraged to buy this product.

 Community- It will prevent the fire from spreading therefore, there will be less casualties and

damage on properties.

Scope and Limitation

This study will entirely focus on the following: (1) only the ceramic type of tiles will be used in

the study; (2) this study will only use wall paint; (3) the specific component of the ceramic tiles that

will be focused on this study is feldspar only; (4) This study will only focus in making a possible

fire retardant. It would also mean that this study will not be covering the other components of the

ceramic tile, any other components of the tile will not be used by the researchers.
