Instructions
Try to get information about a character in your home town and write a narrative (folktale) of it
using the generic structure (setting, characters, plot/events, problem, and solution).
I live in Tebo, Jambi, but I am from Pariaman, so I choose to write a folktale from Pariaman, It’s
about Anggun Nan Tongga.

Kaba Anggun Nan Tongga

In Jorong Kampung Dalam, Pariaman, lived a young man named Anggun Nan Tongga,
who was also called Magek Jabang and held the title Magek Durahman. His mother, Ganto Sani,
died shortly after giving birth. Meanwhile, his father went to Mount Ledang. So, Suto Suri was
taking care of Nan Tongga since childhood. Nan Tongga has a girlfriend named Gondan
Gondoriah. Both, like ancient customs, have been betrothed. As a young man Anggun Nan Tongga
grew up with a lot of expertise. He was skilled in riding, can be pencak silat, well-educated and in
his religious knowledge. At his age, Nan Tongga was really complete as a man.
That was why, when Nangkodoh Bahá who came from the Garinggiang River held a
contest to find her sister’s husband, Intan Korong. Nan Tongga asks for permission and blessing
to Suto Suri to participate. At first Suto Suri did not agree. This is because Nan Tongga was
engaged to Gondan Gondoriah. But the ersistence of the young man made Suto Suri upset and
allowed him.
Armed with his skill, Nan Tongga defeated Nangkodoh Baha in every game: chess,
archery, and sacking the chicken. His victory ashamed Nangkodoh Baha. Because of this, he told
Nan Tongga, "If you are great, why do you let your three uncles”mamak” be captured by pirates
in the Binuang Sati Island?"
Nan Tongga was surprised to hear this. In the past, his three uncles, Mangkudun Sati,
Nangkodoh Rajo, and Katik Intan, said goodbye to go abroad, apparently the reason they did not
go home was because of they were held by pirates. The word Nangkodoh Baha seems to challenge
Nan Tongga. He said, "Just wait, I'll save my three uncles, Baha!"
He asked permission for Suto Suri and Gondan Gondoriah. Both gave Nan Tongga a
blessing. But, Gondan Gondoriah asks for a hand to Nan Tongga. "Nan Tongga, bring me rare
objects and animals at least 120 pieces." Some of the 120 Gondan Gondoriah requests were talking
parrot, Monkey ‘beruk’ who was good at playing harps, scanned cloth that was not wet with water,
Suto-yellow crest, expanded as wide as nature, folded as big as nails, stored in bird eggs.
Nan Tongga went sailing by boat called Dandang Panjang, accompanied by his loyal
attendant Bujang Salamat. His captain named Malin Cik Ameh. After various ports were lined up,
finally Nan Tongga reached Binuang Sati Island, where the pirates led by Palimo Bajau were
inhabited. Arriving there, Nan Tongga was arrested by Palimo Bajau's envoy, who later defeated
him. Break up a war between Nan Tongga and the pirates. In the war, Nan Tongga killed Palimo
Bajau, and the pirates dismissed themselves.
Then, Nan Tongga finds his uncle, Nangkodoh Rajo, who was locked in a pigsty.
Nangkodoh Rajo told that his other two uncle, Katik Intan and Makhudum Sati successfully
escaped during the battle in the sea. He also said that what Gondan Gondoriah asked ‘The smart
parrot’ was in Kuala Koto Tanau.
Then, Nan Tongga ordered Malin Cik Mas to return to Pariaman using the spoils from
Binuang Sati. Because the Dandang Panjang Ship was used by Nan Tongga. Nan Tongga ordered
Malin Cik Mas that Nangkodoh Rajo had been released and he was safe and was sailing with
Dandang Panjang to Tanau City. Unfortunately, Malin Cik Mas betrayed. When he saw Gondan
Gondoriah's beauty, he told the contrary that Nan Tongga had died and that Malin Cik Mas was
made king. After becoming king, Malin Miss Mas sent a messenger to propose Gondan Gondoriah.
However, the woman rejected him with the reason that she was still mourning the death of Nan
Tongga.
Meanwhile, in Tanau City, Anggun Nan Tongga found that his other uncle had been king
there. His uncle's daughter, Anduti Sutan's Puti, had a talking parrot. Nan Tongga then asked the
bird to talk. With a fine Andami Sutan suggests Nan Tongga that only the man who marries her
can order the parrot to talk. Because, he did not find any other way, so Nan Tongga married
Andami Sutan.
After marrying Andami Sutan, the talking parrot was released from his cage and went to
Pariaman. And magically, met Gondan Gondoriah. At the window, the parrot rattled about Nan
Tongga who had married Andami Sutan, his uncle's daughter. It certainly caused sadness in
Gondan Gondoriah's heart. He returned to Mount Ledang, where he came from.
Knowing the parrot was released, Nan Tongga could understand that the parrot would fly
to Pariaman and met Gondan Gondoriah. It raised suspicion in Nan Tongga mind, who missed his
hometown and his fiancee. He left his wife, Andami Sutan, who was pregnant. Arriving in
Pariaman, Nan Tongga was told by Suto Suri that Gondan Gondoriah had returned to Mount
Ledang. Nan Tongga then chased and persuaded her to return to Pariaman. Because of her love,
Gondan Gondoriah melted her heart, and returned with Nan Tongga.
When they wanted to get married, Nan Tongga and Gondan Gondoriah, looking for Tuanku
Haji Mudo for the blessing. Both went with Bujang Selamat. However, Tuanku Haji Mudo said
that Nan Tongga and Gondan Gondoriah were siblings. Because Nan Tongga had breastfed on
Gondan Gondoriah's mother. According to Islamic law, Nan Tongga and Gondan Gondoriah,
cannot marry in this world and can only be mate in the afterlife.
Because they had not gone home, Suto Suri sent people to look for Nan Tongga and Gondan
Gondoriah. They found Bujang Selamat himself who said that Nan Tongga, Gondan Gondoriah,
and Tuanku Haji Mudo had risen to the sky.

Hopefully from this story we can take the moral lessons
