Cupak and Grantang

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived two brothers: Cupak and Grantang. They
were as different as day and night, for Cupak was a mischievous, sneaky fellow with a love for
food, while Grantang was a handsome, hardworking man with a kind heart that made every
woman swoon.

One day, their parents asked them to work on the farm. Cupak did go, but he lazed
around, ate, and did nothing. Grantang, on the other hand, diligently plowed the soil, planted
seeds, and cleaned the farm from weeds. When he finished his work, he asked Cupak if he
wanted to go home, but Cupak said he still wanted to play and asked Grantang to go home
without him, as he wanted to take a quick bath to wash off the dirt. So Grantang left for home,
and Cupak, feeling mischievous, threw himself in the mud and pretended to have worked hard all
day. When he arrived home, Cupak deceived their parents by lying that he had finished all the
work alone while Grantang was having fun with women.

Their father, furious at Grantang's supposed laziness, threw him out of the house even though he
had done nothing wrong.

"Why did you let your brother do all the work? You ungrateful son! I do not wish to have a lazy
son like you! Go away!" he shouted.

Despite feeling hurt, Grantang decided to leave without argument and make his own way
in the world. Cupak tried to bring Grantang back home, but he refused and left anyway. Cupak
trying to make up for his mistake followed Grantang wherever he went. They eventually
stumbled upon an unfamiliar region. They came across a food seller and Grantang asked her
“Where are we? Why is it so so quiet here?” The food seller replied, “Well hello handsome man,
this land is named Kediri and has become quiet because our princess was kidnapped by the giant,
I Menaru.” “I Menaru you say? Where does he live?” asked Grantang

“He lives in a cave up on that hill. No one has dared to come close to that terrifying giant.” said
the seller. Hearing this Grantang was determined to save the princess, but Cupak was too scared
and tried to convince him not to. Despite this, Grantang was determined to save the princess even
if it meant doing it all by himself. He made his way up the hill with Cupak following him from
behind. Grantang slowly entered the cave awakening the giant. “Arrgh!” the giant shouted as he
stood up, shaking the cave’s walls. Grantang stood in front of him bravely with his keris,
studying the giant’s moves. Grantang knew that the giant could only move slowly, so he quickly
ran left and right to irritate the giant. “Come and get me!” he said. Then, when the giant knelt
down to catch Grantang, that’s when he jumped as hard as he could to stab the giant in its chest.
Killing it instantly. Shortly after, he found the princess who was kidnapped deep in the cave. It
was dark inside so the princess did not see clearly what happened. The only thing

she noticed was the man who saved her wore a gold ring on his finger. After rescuing the

princess, Grantang asked Cupak to help them out of the cave. However, Cupak only pulled

the princess’ hand and closed the hole. Leaving Grantang alone inside the dark cave with I

Menaru’s dead body.

Cupak, taking advantage of his brother's bravery, told the king that he had defeated I
Menaru and was rewarded with the throne. However, the princess knew that something was off.
She noticed that the man who saved her wore a gold ring, but Cupak didn’t. Knowing the
princess’s suspicions, Cupak commanded his soldiers to throw Grantang into the river so that he
could hide the truth about I Menaru's death.

Thankfully, an old couple found Grantang's body and took care of him until he recovered.

“Where am I? Am I in heaven now? Are you two angels sent by God?” raved Grantang.

The couple giggled, “No, young man. Fortunately, you’re still alive. We found you washed

up by the river bank with an injured body and we decided to take care of you. You can stay

here until you recover, but you don’t have to rush, take it easy.” said the old man.

“Thank you for taking care of me. I will repay your kindness for sure. Please let me know if
there is anything I can do for you two.” said Grantang. “Well, then you can help us sell the
flowers from our garden. It’s what we do for a living” said the old lady. Without any hesitation,
he agreed to help them at their flower shop. Not long after, they became very close and
continued to live together as a family.
Grantang went on to live a happy life, while Cupak's deceit caught up to him, and he
lived the rest of his life as a selfish ruler, constantly served with all sorts of delicacies.

Coincidentally, the princess loved buying flowers and that day she decided to buy from the
couple’s shop. She noticed that the old woman was wearing a gold ring that belonged to her
savior. Curious, the princess asked to visit the couple’s house and hoped to find her savior living
with them. Upon arriving at their house, the princess was delighted to find Grantang there. She
was overwhelmed with emotion and asked the old couple for permission to bring Grantang to the
palace. She also requested that Cupak, a notorious liar, be banished from the land of Kediri.

The princess's father was overjoyed to see his daughter so happy, and the two of them
eventually got married. As a result, Grantang became the new ruler of the land, and the people
were pleased to see Cupak gone for good.

The story of Cupak and Grantang teaches us that hard work, honesty, and kindness are virtues
that should be cherished, while deceit and selfishness will eventually lead to one's downfall.
