16
6 Operation

6.1 Description of the Device

The pressure reducing valve 544 reduces the unregulated gas pressure of the gas
containers to a constant operation pressure.
It ensures the precise and pressure-independent functioning of the inlet valve of the
vacuum regulator and prevents re-liquefaction of the gas.
If the reducing valve is additionally equipped with an servomotor, it protects the
dosing unit in case of fault conditions against penetrating liquid gas by its immediate
shut-off function. In this case, the valve is controlled by the control panel of the
evaporator. In case of power failure, this version ensures immediate shut-off.
Via an adjusting screw the valve cone can be raised above the valve seat within
defined limits, so that the operating pressure can be adjusted to any setpoint value
between 2 and 3 bar for Cl2 (between 3 and 4 bar for NH3).
Pressure fluctuations are compensated for by the construction with spring-loaded
double diaphragm system, so that the operating pressure is kept constant (at
constant flow).
If the operating pressure exceeds the setpoint value, the spring-cone-diaphragm
system causes the valve to close.
If the pressure reducing valve 544 is connected to an Grundfos Alldos Gasdetect,
the valve will be immediately closed in case of a gas breakout.

7 Maintenance

Rates for cleaning and maintenance:

❏ Replace gaskets every two years.
❏ In case of dirt accumulations.
❏ In case of malfunction.
❏ If the back pressure (the pressure after the reducing valve) rises for more
than 1.5 bar when the system is switched off. Then the valve is leaky.

WARNING Switch off the whole system before doing cleaning and
! maintenance work!

Before re-starting, check the tightness!

Danger of gas breakout!

7.1 Cleaning the Valve and

replacing the Gaskets
● Switch off the whole system.
● Take the valve off the line.
If the valve is mounted directly into the line: disassemble the valve.
● If present, take off the servomotor.
● Loosen the nut (24) and relieve the valve by turning the adjustment screw
(13).
● Loosen the screws (1.9) and take off the upper part, including diaphragms
(1.10, 1.11) and O-ring (1.20).
● Loosen the screws (1.1), take out the cover (1.2) and the valve cone (1.4)
with spring (1.5) and cap (1.7).
● Loosen the screws (1.8) and take out the cover (1.3) and the valve seat
(1.17) with O-ring (1.18).
● Clean all parts with hot water (ca. 40 °C) and dry them well.

CAUTION Danger of corrosion when mounting moist parts!

● Replace O-rings (1.18, 1.20) and flat gasket (1.6) by new ones.
● Remount all parts in reverse sequence.
• For versions with servomotor, observe assembly dimensions:

46,5 mm (R ½")
36,5 mm (R1") min. 1 mm

• The silver diaphragm must be placed at the gas-leading side (for

direction of installation, see spare parts drawing).

20
● If present, remount the servomotor.
● Remount the valve into the line.
● Restart the system.
● Check the tightness.
● Adjust the desired back pressure.

7.2 Adjusting the Limit

Switches (only Versions
with Servomotor)
If the back pressure should be adjusted to a different value than the factory setting,
the corresponding limit switch must also be adjusted.
At the servomotor, four limit switches are present:
❏ Two limit switches for controlling the motor:
S1 open
S2 closed
❏ Two limit switches for signalling the state of the valve:
S3 open
S4 closed
Normally the limit switches for "closed" need not be adjusted.
The limit switches S3 and S4 for signalling must be adjusted in a way that they switch
shortly before the limit switches S1 and S2. Otherwise the servomotor would stop
before its new position could be signalized.

Adjusting the "open" limit switches

● At first, set the valve manually to the desired pressure
(➜ chapter 5.3).
● Switch off the mains voltage.

WARNING Mortal danger!

! Switch off mains voltage before removing the cover of
the servomotor!

● Remove the cover of the servomotor.

CAUTION Do not loosen the locknuts (A)!

● Turn the cam S1 with a screwdriver until it operates the switch.

● Turn the cam S3 with a screwdriver until it operates the switch earlier than S1.
● Put the cover onto the servomotor.
● Switch on mains voltage.
