On& the& 19th& and& 26th& day&of& January& 2019,& we& conducted& an&interview&in&
Brgy.& 368& Zone& 37& District& III,& Mla.& with& Chairwoman& Marissa& Yanga& and&
Kagawad& Andy& Mallorca.& Each& group& were& assigned& to& prepare& questions& for&
them&about&their&plans&for&their&Barangay.&During&the&interview,&my&groupmates&
and& I& recorded& their& answers& so& we& can& be& able& to& put& them& into& words& and&
translate&them&into&Filipino&and&English&language.&Same&questions&were&asked&to&

Last&January&19,&2019&we&have&conducted&an&interview&from&the&officials&of&
Barangay& 368.& in& Manila.& We& discussed& about& how& they& managed& their&
environment.& According& to& their& Chairman& the& main& priority& of& the& officials& is&
about&drugs,&but&they&have&other&problems&like&demolishment&that&will&happen&in&
their& barangay.& By& that,& they& don’t& have& enough& funds& to& sustain& the& needs& of&
their&environment.&Also,&the&Kagawad&said&that,&Zumba&is&their&way&to&divert&the&
attention& of& their& community& instead& of& using& drugs.& The& main& project& of& the&
Kagawad& is& focusing& on& the& health& and& also& many& people& requested& to& have&
zumba&in&their&community.&

Because& of& this& interview& I& learned& about& their& plans& for& their& community.&
For&them,&the&health&of&their&community&is&the&most&important&and&main&priority.&
The& officials& want& them& to& realize& that& drugs& are& bad& for& their& health.& As& a&
student,&if&there&will&be&a&time&that&I’m&going&to&be&a&leader&of&a&community&I&will&
also& focusing& on& their& health& because& as& a& leader& I& feel& like& all& the& members& of&
our&society&is&my&family.&I&want&them&to&feel&secured&to&our&environment.&I&don’t&
want&them&to&feel&harmed&on&their&own&home.&I&want&them&to&remember&me&as&a&
good& leader& and& to& be& inspired& of& my& good& will& because& I& only& want& what’s& the&
best&for&my&society.&

Being& a& good& leader,& you& must& have& a& trait& of& dependabilityl& you& need& to&
have& a& strong& personality& because& your& community& depends& on& you,& and& how&
you&make&a&decision&on&the&problems.&You&must&have&a&clear&vision&you&want&to&
make& because& they& rely& on& your& plans& for& them.& As& a& leader& you& also& need& to&
consider& the& idea& of& others,& you& must& open& your& mind& from& their& suggestions&
because& not& all& your& decisions& are& right.& And& that& is& what& I& learned& from& this&
activity.&

Drug& addiction& is& a& problem& that& has& been& increasing& immensely& among&
our& society& today.& Drug& addictions& can& only& hinder& or& restrain& us& from&
accomplishing&goals&or&dreams&in&life.&People&sometimes&feel&they&are&too&bright,&
too& powerful,& too& much& in& control& to& become& addictive.& Addiction& can& trap&
anyone.&It&can&lead&to&harming&ones&body,&causing&problems&in&family&structure,&
and& contribute& to& the& delinquency& in& society.& The& sooner& people& seek& help& for&
drug&addiction&problems,&the&more&chances&they&have&of&gaining&control&of&their&
life& once& again.& However,& abstinence& is& the& safest& way& to& live& a& longer& and&
healthier&life.&

As&we&conducted&the&interview&in&Brgy.&368&Zone&37&District&III,&Mla.&about&
their& objectives& for& their& community,& Kagawad& Andy& Mallina& and& Chairwoman&
Marissa& Yanga& said& that& they& are& aiming& to& stop& the& excessive& usage& of& drugs&
which&is,&I&think,&that&the&committee&of&the&said&Barangay&is&concerned&with&their&
constituent’s& health& and& protection.& Also,& the& said& Kagawad& told& us& that& the&
Committee& of& Health& holds& annual& Zumba& every& December& for& their& Give* Love&
month&while&Chairwoman&Marissa&holds&the&Feeding*Program&for&stray&kids.&&

With& that,& I& realized& that& the& Barangay& officials& were& truly& genuine& in&
helping&their&citizens.&They&treat&everyone&not&just&their&neighbors&but&a&family&to&
them.& I& admire& their& advocacies& about& health& and& ceasing& the& excessive& drug&
usage&because&it&is&of&great&importance&for&them.Now,&I&became&more&certain&of&
how&am&I&going&to&respond&to&my&community.&It&may&not&be&financially&but&I&will&be&
an&allcout&volunteer&of&helping&them&seek&what&path&in&life&to&take.&

Addiction& is& a& condition& where& the& individual& becomes&

permanently&or&temporarily&becomes&dependent&on&the&substance&
consumed.& It’s& a& sad& fact& that& drugs& are& being& abused& among&
people&not&only&in&our&country&but&also&it&is&practiced&by&others.&
In& Barangay& 368,& Zone& 37,& District& 3,& Manila,& their&
chairwoman& is& promoting& a& campaign& against& drugs& and& I& think&
that&it&is&a&good&thing&to&help&people&prevent&on&doing&it.&Though&
our&government&are&imposing&laws,&still,&it&is&not&properly&followed.&
For& me,& addiction& has& always& been& a& part& of& the& human&
condition.&We&have&seen&the&devastation&it&is&capable&of,&but&now,&
more& than& ever,& it& is& affecting& our& daily& lives.& But& addiction& on&
drugs& does& not& discriminate& against& any& person.& Whether& it& is&
gambling&or&drugs,&when&the&brain&reaches&the&point&of&addiction,&
the&individual’s&life&will&be&taken&over.&The&good&news&is&that&there&
is& hope.& Addiction& is& a& treatable& disease,& and& there& is& help&
available&for&those&caught&in&the&trap&like&what&the&chairwoman&of&
Barangay&368,&Mrs.&Marissa&P.&Yanga&is&promoting.&Recovery&is&
possible&from&all&addictions!&

On&January&19,&2019,&we&went&to&Brgy.&368&Zone&37,&District&3,&to&interview&the&
Chairman&and&the&Kagawad.&Since&we&were&too&early,&my&group&and&I&waited&for&them&
to& arrive& before& asking& for& their& permission& for& the& interview.& Kagawad& Andy& Mallina&
arrived&first&and&asked&for&a&few&minutes&before&allowing&us&to&ask&him&some&questions&
about& the& barangay’s& programs& and& projects.& Soon& enough& after& we& finished&
interviewing&Kagawad&Mallina,&Chairwoman&Mariza&Yanga&was&next&and&we’ve&learned&
a&few&things&from&both&of&them&about&their&plans&for&their&barangay.&&
&
As& we& all& know& through& the& news& in& the& television& or& social& media& that& our&
President,& Rodrigo& Duterte,& has& been& on& an& anticdrug& campaign& dubbed& as& “War& on&
Drugs”&where&he&is&accounted&for&thousands&of&mass&killings&of&suspected&drug&users.&
For& Chairwoman& Yanga& and& Kagawad& Mallina,& this& issue& is& very& prominent& in& their&
barangay.&So&to&address&this&issue,&and&as&part&of&the&health&committee&(which&focuses&
on&the&importance&of&health),&they&are&planning&on&implementing&Zumba&fitness&in&their&
barangay.& As& it& is& also& a& frequent& request& from& their& townspeople.& It& is& also& very&
accommodating& as& according& to& Kagawad& Mallina,& their& people& who& are& induced& in&
drugs&can&be&replenished&by&releasing&the&toxins&of&the&drug&in&their&bodies&by&actively&
moving.&It&is&a&known&fact&that&in&order&to&release&these&toxins&from&the&body,&it&has&to&be&
naturally& detoxified,& and& Zumba& is& another& way& of& doing& that.& It& is& tactical& of& them& to&
think&of&that&because&of&the&drug&problem&in&their&barangay,&because&not&only&does&drug&
users& get& to& freely& detoxify,& the& elderly& can& also& join& the& exercise& in& order& for& them& to&
maintain&or&retain&their&fitness&and&gain&a&healthy&lifestyle.&As&a&barangay&that&wants&to&
resolve&their&drug&problem,&it&is&a&nod&for&me&that&their&Chairwoman&and&Kagawad&is&set&
to& confront& the& problem& with& a& health& focused& mindset.& They& give& importance& and&
emphasis&to&the&health&of&the&people&that&they&would&rather&have&them&dance&than&solve&
the&problem&by&killing.&

I&interviewed&two&of&the&Barangay&officials&of&Brgy.&368&Zone&
37.& The& barangay& chairwoman& Marissa% Yanga% and& barangay&
Kagawad& Andy% Mallina.% The& interview& experience& with& the&
chairwoman& and& Kagawad& of& the& barangay& was& knowledgeable&
about& listening,& which& made& the& interview& flow& much& smoother&
and&made&the&environment&more&pleasant.&There&are&people&who&
do&not&know&much&about&listening&and&do&not&consider&it&as&a&vital&
aspect&of&communication.&Meanwhile,&chairwoman&and&Kagawad&
had& so& much& to& emphasize& and& say& valuable& things& about&
listening.& As& matter& of& fact,& they& enabled& me& to& gain& a& better&
insight&about&listening.&They&shared&some&of&experiences&where&it&
is& required& to& listen& effectively& and& intently.& Moreover,& they&
mentioned& some& of& their& biggest& plans& for& their& barangay& is&
Zumba.%I&used&several&strategies&to&make&sure&the&interview&was&
a& successl& It& allowed& them& to& have& a& better& perspective& of& what&
the& projects& for& their& barangay& is& all& about.& However,& there& were&
some&challenges&I&had&to&face&during&and&after&the&interview.&First&
and& foremost,& we& had& to& do& the& interview& we& used& a& video& to&
record&our&conversation&and&the&interview&went&very&well.&

& Our& group& went& to& Barangay& 368.& in& Manila& to& clean& their& community& last&
January&2019.&We&cleaned&the&streets&that&within&the&society&and&I&saw&some&part&
of& the& street& some& people& have& discipline& and& some& people& don’t& have,& they&
throw&their&cigarettes&butts&in&the&streets&and&some&people&just&throw&their&trash&
in& the& canal,& and& I& realize& that& it& is& not& good& for& their& community,& they& need& to&
know&that&it&is&not&good&in&their&society.&&

The& barangay& officials& should& also& focus& on& how& to& maintain& the&
cleanliness&of&the&surroundings&and&I&think&that&they&must&conduct&an&activity&and&
seminar& like& on& how& to& recycle& and& to& segregate& their& waste.& Cleaning& is& very&
important& because& not& only& you& will& maintain& the& beauty& of& the& community& but&
also& helping& the& environment& not& to& cause& pollutions& that& causes& as& floods,&
landslides&etc.&If&every&individual&know&how&to&throw&their&waste&properly&even&if&
it’s& tiny& pieces& they& can& help& our& earth.& If& we& are& responsible& enough& with& our&
actions& we& can& have& a& better& life& and& clean& surroundings& it& also& benefit& to& our&
own&health.&&

diseases.&We&held&a&cleancup&operation&in&Barangay&368&Zone&37&District&III&Mla.,&
last& Saturday,& 26th& of& January& 2019.& The& place& was& filthy,& perhaps,& there& were&
human& and& animal& wastes& needed& to& be& disposed,& mixed& biodegradables& and&
noncbiodegradables,& leftovers& and& whatnot.& It& was& disgusting& to& witness& how&
undisciplined& their& citizens& were.& For& a& moment,& I& thought& that& NSTP& 2& did& a&
great& advocacy& of& helping& different& Barangays& here& in& Manila& conducting& a&
community&service.&It&paved&the&way&for&students&to&be&taught&of&how&important&
cleanliness&is,&that&it&has&a&huge&impact&for&our&health.&By&this,&I’ve&learnt&to&be&
more& cautious& of& separating& biodegradable& wastes& from& noncbiodegradable&
realizing& how& difficult& and& time& consuming& it& is& for& the& garbage& collectors& to&
segregate&our&trash&instead&of&just&collecting&it,&that&instead&of&us&our&doing&the&

what& are& or& aren’t& good& practices,& and& to& help& keep& the& public&

When& we& conducted& our& activity& in& Barangay& 368,& I& find& it&
interesting& to& clean& the& streets& because& I& know& that& one& of& the&
common&issues&in&our&country&is&cleanliness.&This&activity&gave&me&an&
opportunity& to& become& a& more& productive& individual,& concerning& on&
how& to& care& and& how& to& be& responsible& in& our& community& and&
environment.&Presenting&and&engaging&such&activity&is&indeed&a&great&

& On& January& 26,& 2019,& we& went& to& Brgy.& 368& Zone& 37,& District& 3,& again& but& this&
time& we& went& to& clean& and& help& the& barangay.& First,& we& split& into& two& team& in& order& to&
maximize&the&area.&Those&teams&were&then&assigned&a&task.&We&had&wipers&who&would&
swipe& and& pile& the& garbage& up,& and& then& some& would& pick& the& trashes& up& and& put& it&
inside& a& trash& cart& that& some& of& us& is& assigned& to& hold,& then& we& also& had& someone&
assigned&to&record&everything.&My&job&was&to&swipe,&but&I&took&photos&too,&and&I&swiped&
for&hours&until&the&whole&area&assigned&to&us&was&squeaky&clean.&It&wasn’t&as&hard&as&I&
thought&as&the&people,&at&least&most&of&them,&in&the&barangay&was&disciplined&in&terms&of&
seeing&their&garbage&piled&up&outside&and&not&just&scattered&everywhere.&Although,&the&
problem&I’ve&encountered,&for&the&most&part,&was&the&ever&present&stools&of&dogs&or&cats.&
It& was& all& over& the& place& and& it& was& unavoidable& because& the& barangay& was& crawling&
with&dogs&and&cats.&The&amount&of&stool&I’ve&swiped&was&unimaginable&as&well&as&the&
smell& that& lingered& in& the& air.& Nevertheless,& by& the& time& we& were& done,& we’ve& filled& up&
every&trash&cart,&scooped&up&every&dog/cat&stools,&swiped&every&corner&free&of&garbage,&
and&our&sweat&induced&foreheads&were&finally&wiped.&

I& can& say& that& this& experience& was& exhilarating& as& I’ve& made& myself& proud& after&
doing&such&a&big&task&but&is,&nonetheless,&made&to&make&the&lives&of&others&good.&Even&
though& we& were& only& given& a& day& to& clean& and& help& the& community,& I’ve& learned& the&
importance&of&picking&up&your&own&trash&as&well&as&where&the&right&place&to&put&it&in.&We&
were&a&group&of&people&cleaning&the&whole&barangay&and&we&had&encountered&problems&
(i.e.&the&heat,&the&smell,&the&weight&of&the&garbage&collected,&etc.)&I’ve&come&to&think&of&
what&more&if&I&was&the&only&one&to&clean&up?&What&if&it&was&my&job&to&do&that&one&thing&
over& and& over& again,& alone?& It& made& me& be& more& respectful& to& the& cleaners& of& every&
barangay,&more&specifically&to&the&one&in&the&barangay&where&we&went.&I&saw&him&that&
day&and&that&was&when&I’ve&come&to&the&conclusion&of&how&hard&their&jobs&actually&are,&

College& of& Manila& conducted& a& clean& and& green& operation& at&
Barangay& 368& Zone& 37.& We& started& cleaning& and& helping& our&
community& with& a& joy& in& our& heart.& We& clean& the& surroundings.&
Even&we&felt&tired&at&that&time,&we&still&smile&because&we&believe&
that& in& this& simple& way,& we& can& help& a& lot& in& protecting& our&
environment.&

The& experience& was& great& and& we& really& had& fun& doing& the&
activity.&I&realized&the&value&of&our&environment.&Every&waste&that&

to& concatenate& the& purpose& of& this& community& service.& It& is& helping& and&
appreciating& the& people& and& the& community& of& where& you& live& in& and&

I& will& never& forget& of& the& bond& we& shared& and& the& knowledge& we&

&&&&&&&&During& the& 9th& and& 16th& day& of& February,& we& made& a& dustpan& out& of&
recycled& materials.& We& used& wood& for& the& handle,& a& tin& can& of& oil& for& the&
base,&and&nails&to&hold&the&pieces&together&and&form&a&dustpan.&In&order&to&
make&it&presentable,&we&decided&to&paint&it&color&green&because,&mainly,&to&
send&the&message&“clean&green&like&mother&nature.”&in&the&whole&process&of&
building& the& dustpan,& I& have& come& to& the& realization& that& in& making&
something& that& benefits& a& whole& community& feels& comforting.& Cleaning& is&
difficult& to& do& if& the& materials& are& not& intact& or& in& a& distressed& situation,& so&
the& feeling& of& satisfaction& washes& over& me& when& I& think& about& how& much&
help& we& can& bring& with& one& tiny& favor.& Stodd& Stocker& once& said,& “Helping&

When& our& professor& in& NSTP& told& us& to& make& a& “dustpan”& using&
biscuit&can&&and&&a&piece&of&wood,&I&quietly&asked&myself&“Why&do&we&need&
to&make&it?&Why&&not&just&buy?”&
& But& then,& I& don’t& have& a& choice,& but& to& follow& my& professor’s&
instruction.& While& making& the& said& dustpan,& a& lot’s& of& positive& things& come&
into& my& mind.& The& dustpan& that& I& am& creating& is& bigger& than& an& ordinary&
dustpan.& It& will& accommodate& and& can& get& more& garbage& than& the& ready&
made.& I& am& creating& a& strong& and& durable& dustpan& and& can& be& use& for& a&
long&period&of&time&and&cannot&be&destroy&easily.&&
Yes!&I&must&admit&I&find&a&hard&time&and&felt&so&tired&while&
making& it& specially,& cutting& the& biscuit& can,& to& shape& it& and& form& it& into& a&

broom&and&built&a&3pcs.&dustpan&out&of&Biscuit&Can.&We&buy&the&materials&to&
build&it&so&that&we&can&start&to&build&our&dustpan&we&buy&3&pcs&of&plywood&
and&3pcs&biscuit&can&we&cut&the&biscuits&can&in&half&after&that&we&hammered&
the&plywood&to&the&can&we&cut&into&half&after&we&paint&it&in&color&green.&We&
built&this&thing&so&that&we&can&help&to&the&barangay&to&save&money&and&so&
that& more& people& in& their& community& can& now& volunteer& to& clean& their&
places&or&streets&without&buying&broom&or&dustpans.&

I&learned&in&this&activity&how&to&build&a&dustpan,&it&is&hard&to&build&because&

tools& or& safety& gears.& but& it’s& worth& it& I& know& it& will& have& a& benefit& to& the&
barangay&where&going&to&donate&it,&by&making&these&things&I&can&help&the&
community&of&the&barangay&that&are&in&need&of&dustpans&and&broom,&and&it&
can& help& us& when& we’re& going& to& clean& in& the& barangay& we& can& use& it& to&

Last&March&2&of&2019,&our&NSTP&team&conducted&a&Literacy&Program&
to& Brgy.& 368& Zone& 37& District& III& of& Mla.& We& taught& stray& children& to& read&
and& draw.& I& saw& them& enjoying& the& moment,& I& saw& their& driven& hearts& in&
need& of& education.& They& may& lack& financial& provision& but& their& hearts& are&
abundant& of& love& to& learn.& I'm& happy& to& witness& such& children.& At& a& young&
age,& they& already& value& how& education& would& help& them& in& the& future.&
Knowing&that&they&live&near&squatters&area&they&might&be&influenced&to&do&

& On& March& 9,& 2019,& we& went& to& Brgy.& 368& Zone& 37,& District& 3,& again&
but& this& time& we& went& to& clean& and& help& the& barangay.& First,& we& split& into&
two&team&in&order&to&maximize&the&area.&Those&teams&were&then&assigned&a&
task.& We& had& wipers& who& would& swipe& and& pile& the& garbage& up,& and& then&
some&would&pick&the&trashes&up&and&put&it&inside&a&trash&cart&that&some&of&
us& is& assigned& to& hold,& then& we& also& had& someone& assigned& to& record&
everything.& My& job& was& to& swipe,& but& I& took& photos& too,& and& I& swiped& for&
hours&until&the&whole&area&assigned&to&us&was&squeaky&clean.&It&wasn’t&as&
hard&as&I&thought&as&the&people,&at&least&most&of&them,&in&the&barangay&was&
disciplined& in& terms& of& seeing& their& garbage& piled& up& outside& and& not& just&
scattered&everywhere.&Although,&the&problem&I’ve&encountered,&for&the&most&
part,&was&the&ever&present&stools&of&dogs&or&cats.&It&was&all&over&the&place&
and&it&was&unavoidable&because&the&barangay&was&crawling&with&dogs&and&
cats.& The& amount& of& stool& I’ve& swiped& was& unimaginable& as& well& as& the&
smell& that& lingered& in& the& air.& Nevertheless,& by& the& time& we& were& done,&
we’ve& filled& up& every& trash& cart,& scooped& up& every& dog/cat& stools,& swiped&
every&corner&free&of&garbage,&and&our&sweat&induced&foreheads&were&finally&
wiped.&

I& can& say& that& this& experience& was& exhilarating& as& I’ve& made& myself&
proud& after& doing& such& a& big& task& but& is,& nonetheless,& made& to& make& the&
lives&of&others&good.&Even&though&we&were&only&given&a&day&to&clean&and&
help& the& community,& I’ve& learned& the& importance& of& picking& up& your& own&
trash& as& well& as& where& the& right& place& to& put& it& in.& We& were& a& group& of&
people& cleaning& the& whole& barangay& and& we& had& encountered& problems&
(i.e.&the&heat,&the&smell,&the&weight&of&the&garbage&collected,&etc.)&I’ve&come&
to&think&of&what&more&if&I&was&the&only&one&to&clean&up?&What&if&it&was&my&
job&to&do&that&one&thing&over&and&over&again,&alone?&It&made&me&be&more&
respectful&to&the&cleaners&of&every&barangay,&more&specifically&to&the&one&in&
the& barangay& where& we& went.& I& saw& him& that& day& and& that& was& when& I’ve&
come& to& the& conclusion& of& how& hard& their& jobs& actually& are,& and& I& respect&
them&for&that.&

I& believe& that& each& of& us& want& to& enjoy& living& in& a& clean& and&&
confortable& place,& house& & and& community,& that’s& why& our& parents& teach&
their& children& on& how& to& clean,& and& the& importance& of& having& a& clean&
surroundings.&
Again,& I& am& glad& that& our& school& never& stop& creating& meaningful&
activity&not&only&for&us&to&&learn&&but&also&to&give&us&a&chance&to&be&a&part&of&
giving&a&community&services&where&we&also&enhance&our&skills&and&talents&
in&doing&such&&activity.&
The&cleancup&drive&gave&me&an&experience&of&a&wonderful&activity&that&
makes& me& realized& that& being& “UNITED”& will& always& result& with& more&
successful& task.& Our& “AIM”& Goal& can& be& achieved& easily& if& we& just& always&
work&hand&in&hand,&just&what&we&had&experienced&in&“The&Cleancup&Drive”.&
