Pilgard PVI: Compounding Information

Pilgard PVI is an ideal Pre Vulcanization (Scorch) Inhibitor for NR, IR, SBR, BR and their Blends, NBR, CR and other
diene rubber based compounds based on accelerated Sulfur cure. Only very small dosages such as 0.05 to 0.15 phr
can improve the scorch delay of NR based Sulfenamide accelerated rubber compounds by 30 % without affecting the
rate or state of cure. Pilgard PVI does not deactivate PPD class antidegradants and does not cause any porosity
problems in the extrudates as are associated with other retarders.

Pilgard PVI is an effective Scorch Inhibitor with almost all types of accelerators and for all types of Sulfur cured rubber
based compounds. Pilgard PVI offers linear and predictable response to scorch time as the dosage is progressively
increased and is most sensitive to Sulfenamide accelerated NR based compounds. An approximate order of
response offered by Pilgard PVI to various rubbers is as follows:

NR > NBR > SBR > EPDM > Butyl (IIR) > Polychloroprene (CR)

Pilgard PVI can also be used effectively in compounds based on NBR-PVC Blends, Polyacrylic Rubbers and Sulfured
cured Polyurethanes.

Pilgard PVI is most effective at Sulfur dosages between 1.5-3.0 phr. At lower sulfur dosages the response offered by
Pilgard PVI depends on the type of the accelerator used where as at very high dosages of Sulfur; the response
offered by Pilgard PVI is relatively poor. Pilgard PVI is not effective with Sulfurless cures such as Organic Peroxides,
PF Resins or Metal Oxides.

It is very important to determine the accurate dosage of Pilgard PVI required for producing the desired level of Scorch
Delay under factory operating condition for a given compound. This dosage can be finalized by conducting laboratory
experiments followed by factory trials by evaluating the compound for Mooney Scorch safety Time as well as other
vulcanizate properties. Excess use of Pilgard PVI should be avoided in any compound since this may delay the cure
time, the vulcanizate properties may be affected due to possibilities of under cure. Unreacted PVI may bloom on the
surface of rubber. (Bloom from the surface of the rubber product can be washed with water.). Pilgard PVI is Non-
Staining and Non-Discoloring.

Pilgard PVI does not cause any detrimental effect on the unaged or aged vulcanizate properties of the rubber
vulcanizates when used at the optimized dosage.

Pilgard PVI is an effective tool to overcome various processing limitations. For example:

a) Incorporation of Pilgard PVI can permit addition of curatives at an early stage of mixing for better dispersion
of curatives, reduced mixing cycle time, reduced power consumption, reduced labor and capital investment
costs.
b) Permit use of higher processing speeds and temperatures during mixing, calendaring, extrusion, etc. for
increased productivity and reduced processing cost,
c) Permit use of higher injection temperatures and shorter cure cycles for increased productivity.
d) Permit recovery of rubber compounds with marginal processing safety and recovery of partially scorched
compound for scrap elimination.
e) Improve the storage stability of fully compounded stocks at ambient temperatures (particularly the fast
curing compounds).

Pilgard PVI is generally incorporated along with accelerators and sulphur during internal mixing / mill mixing of the
stocks. In case of fast curing / rework stocks; Pilgard PVI is added on cool mill.

APPLICATIONS

Pilgard PVI is widely used in the manufacture of almost all rubber products based on sulphur curable rubbers. Pilgard
PVI is not used in latex compounding and the rubber products intended for contact with food/drugs.
