PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Quality
Semester II, 2018
Quality
Degree of requirement fulfillment. It is focus on items customer satisfaction, continuous improvement,
and prevention over inspection.

Total Quality: Philosophy conceived by Edwards Deming, focused on a proactive attitude toward quality.
Quality should be planned, not inspected when the work is completed.

Zero Defects: Concept created by Philip Crosby. Do something right initially, and you shouldn’t have to
repeat it. If the money is spent upfront, the effort eliminates or minimize the need for rework.

Fitness for Use: Concept created by Joseph Juran. It implies that the needs of the customers and
stakeholders are defined and then attempted to satisfy.

Continuous Improvement (Kaizen): It takes a proactive stance or position to development, one that
makes improvements throughout a process.. It is focused on not accepting that things are as good as
they can be, but instead seeks process improvement.

Gold Plating: It is the practice of providing more than what the customer requested. Per PMI, this
practice is unaceptable and professionally irresponsible; you should provide only that which was
approved.
Plan Quality
You determine and design the project standards, policies, procedures, etc. It stablishes rules to verify
that the product will adhere to the quality needs of the project.

Perform Quality Control
It is the process in which the product, or the output of the process is measured against the
specifications. Depending of the type of work being done, there are a number of tools /techniques that
should be considered and used as needed (see next slides).

Checklist
Orange Juice Extractor
An automatic orange juice extractor machine is required to be designed and
tested with a prototype. Three components must be identified: 1) Fruit
Basket. 2) Fruit Selector and Cutter. 3) Fruit Squeezer. 4) Juice Receiver 5)
Bagasse Collector.

Plan Quality:
 Fruit Basket must support at most 5kg.
 The process of selecting and cutting must take at least 10 fruit per
minute.
 The Squeezer must take at least 10 fruit per minute.
 Juice Receiver must have a maximum capacity of 8 Lts.
 Bagasse Collector must support at most 20kg.
 Ways of working to identify measures.
 The project must follow organization procedures and documentation

Perform Quality Assurance:

Validate procedures that were followed to obtain designs, calculations
evaluated, client approvals. Validate documentation of structure support test
of components.
