ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN
LEARNING OUTCOME
Student will be able to identify new
technologies, features
and to develop concepts based
upon them
Introduction

Contemporary design can be described as a

modern design that relies on smooth and polished
surfaces, clean lines, simple and uncluttered look. It is
not cold and but spacious and comfortable.
It focuses on color, texture, furniture and lighting.
HI-TECH DESIGN

• The modern movement viewed high technology (steel,

concrete, and glass) as one of its prime bases.
• In recent decades technology has made vast forward
steps, particularly the technology associated with
aircraft, with space exploration, and the associated
advances in communication and computers.
• The style was interpreted in both architecture and
interior design.
EAMES HOUSE AND STUDIO BY CHARLES
EAMES
 Eames in his own house gave an example of direction known as “hi-tech” by
use of metal and glass.
 Exposed open-web joists support the roof, while the exterior walls are made
up of glass and solid panels in standard window and structural elements.
 Use of Primary colors in interiors and stair leading to upper level (can be
seen in the picture below)
 The sleekness of the design made it a favorite backdrop for fashion shoots in
the. Perhaps the proof of its success in fulfilling its program is the fact that it
remained at the center of the Eames' life and work.
POST-MODERNISM

 20th century architectural and interior design

succeeding modernist work, characterized by
historicism and use of decorative elements
VANNA VENTURI HOUSE

 The basic symmetry of plan

is modified by surprising
asymmetries.
 Interior spaces have
unexpectedly angled forms
that upset their routine
rectangularity.
VANNA VENTURI HOUSE
 The rooms have cut off at
diagonals, a central
entrance requires a sharp
turn to reach the doorway,
and a stairway that begins
at an angle widens and is
suddenly narrowed.
 The furniture is traditional
rather than modern classics
that might be expected.
 Conventional furniture
contrasts with the unusual
elements like stair,
fireplace-chimney etc.

PRESERVATION

 Preservation is an attempt that seeks to preserve, conserve and

protect buildings, objects, landscapes or other artifacts of historical
significance.
 Architectural conservation describes the process through which the
material, historical, and design integrity of any built heritage are
prolonged through carefully planned interventions

DECONSTRUCTIVISM

 In late 20th century architecture, design making use

of broken and separated elements.
 It is the impression of fragmentation(process of being
broken into fragments) of constructed building.
 It is characterized by absence of Harmony, Continuty
or Symmetry
 The term comes from the idea of the term
Deconstruction.
PETER EISENMAN,MILLER
 Intersecting cubes generate a complex geometry,
which is emphasized by all- white paint.
 The resulting space is an abstract study in
rectilinear sculptural forms.
 Only the natural wood of flooring and green of
outdoor greenery contrast with white
architectural elements.
 Simple furniture in the interiors reflect the
realities of occupants life.

LATE- MODERNISM

 It is the late 20th century design that continues the

qualities of early modern design.
 Describes work that does not imitate that of modern
pioneers, but that moves ahead in ways in which they might
have been expected to develop their ideas if they were
actively involved in designing buildings.

BY Alexander Calder

 An atrium space leads to the

exhibition galleries on several
levels.
 The plan of the building
based on triangular forms
makes for complex,
interesting spatial
relationships.
 Balconies overlook the
atrium, where a skylight roof
floods the space with light.

Robert Venturi, Chippendale chair,
manufactured by Knoll International, New
York,1978–84.
 This over-imaginative and
unrealistic design of modern
molded plywood construction
has a back cut out in a pattern
suggesting the design of 18th
century Chippendale furniture.
 Such conflation ( mix together
different elements; "The colors
blend well") of modern and
traditional forms is
characteristic of the direction
called post-modern.
