Geometry Project

What: Each group must build a 3-D model. Each model must include at least one of
each of the following shapes.

Shapes
• Cone
• Cylinder
• Sphere
• Prism (any kind)

How: Models may be done in groups of 1, 2, or 3 students. You must tell me who is in
your group (in writing) by Friday, April 13. If you are working by yourself, write that
down and turn it in.

When: Completed models are due Friday, May, 4. Your grade will be decreased by 10
points for every day your project is late. The project must be built on your own time
(outside of class time). In class, on May 4, you will compute the total volume and
surface area of your project.

Grading: This project is worth 50 points. It will be counted as a test/quiz grade. Points
will be assigned as follows:

• Model is nicely done. It is not sloppy. It does not look “thrown together” at the
last minute. (5 points)
• All five required shapes are included in the model. (4 points for each shape)
• You will compute the volume and the surface area of your model.
(25 points) To get the full 25 points:
* All work must be shown (including the formula).
* All measurements and answers must be labeled with the
correct units.

Example Cylinder: radius = 2 cm, height = 5.25 cm

= π(4)(5.25)
= 65.97 cm3

Hints and Tips: Toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls make good cylinders. Ping-
pong balls, golf balls, or any other type of ball will make a good sphere. Bendy straws
can be put together to make prisms and pyramids. Corrugated cardboard can be used to
make prisms and pyramids. These are just suggestions. Be creative!
