CHAPTER I

THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

Background of the study

The researcher studies the possible influence of Extra Curricular Activities on Academic

Performance. There are different opinions and ways on how Extra Curricular Activity can affect

the daily lives of the students. It may be a concern to their social ability towards other people,

their ways on how they communicate with others and to improve their physical and mental

ability. On alluring Extra-Curricular Activities, it may require students to maintain good grades

by participating in sports or in academic contest. It may motivate them to do their best to

participate in the Activity.

Extra-Curricular Activities are acted voluntarily; this is why students spend more time on

Activities than Academic Performance such as Sports, Student Council, Clubs, Debate and

Drama. But there are many variables on engaging Extra-Curricular, it may maintain good grades

of a student who has low performance in school, in short Extra-Curricular Activities are more

likely an Academic Performance in other school especially in the province schools.

Wilson (2009) conceived that Extra-Curricular Activities may help students to develop

more skills and gain friends and can acquire better grades. This Extra-Curricular Activity is a big

help for the students who has low performance in academics. And Extra-Curricular Activities

cost money because other programs offer scholarship to go further to their education.
Students who performed Extra-Curricular Activities achieved higher academic

performance but there are students that are over-scheduled in too many activities that cause

the student to get tired and stressed in academic performances and leads to failing remarks.

The effect of Extra-Curricular Activities is the reason why students can’t focus on the

academic performances, but sometimes it helps the student acquire better grades if the

student participated in an Extra-Curricular Activity. Besides, the student needs to have

anything else aside from studying, the student needs to explore or know what he/she can do. It

can help the student to have a healthy lifestyle especially if he or she will participate in sports,

but not because the student participates in an Extra-Curricular Activity that doesn’t mean that

the student will neglect his studies. That’s the time that the student needs to balance, if he’s

good at Extra-Curricular Activity he or she should be good at Academic Performances.

Students need to balance their time to both Extra-Curricular Activities and Academic

Performance, for them to be able to maintain their grades and could possible make it better.

And also for them to be well informed about this, whether Extra-Curricular Activities can help

them by their daily lives in school or not. It may also provide students with information to

assist their selves in choosing the right school programs.

Students that participate in Extra-Curricular Activity is a big help for them when they go

to college because it increases the students’ sense of attachment and doesn’t lead to failing

grades, but since Extra-Curricular Activity is voluntarily; the students tend to participate all

activities for positive academic outcome like improving grades and educational aspirations.

And because of an over scheduled activities the student cannot balance it anymore with the

Academic Performances that leads to failing remarks.

Framework of the study

Theoretical Framework

The study is anchored on the concept of Nikki Wilson (May 2009) which states that most

student who participate Extra-Curricular Activity benefits having better grades, attending

school more regularly and having a higher self-concept but due to over-scheduled activity the

student tend to be stressed and tired that causes the student not to be focused on his or her

academic performance.
Conceptual Framework

Figure 1 below represents the advantages and disadvantages of students who perform

extra-curricular activity and the solution on how the student can cope up with his or her

studies.

them to cope or balance their academic
performance and the school’s Extra-Curricular
Activities.
Purpose of the study

The main purpose of the study is to determine the effect of Extra-Curricular Activities on

the academic performance among the Humanities and Social Science Students.

1. What is the effect of Extra-Curricular Activities in the academic performance of the

Humanities and Social Sciences Students?

2. Is Extra Curricular Activities important in the Academic Performance of the Students?

3. What is the disadvantages of Extra-Curricular Activities to the Humanities and Social Sciences

Students?

Research Hypothesis

1. The effect of Extra-Curricular Activities to students is they benefit having better grades and

have a higher self-concept and even achieve higher academic performance.

2. Extra-Curricular Activities is not important in the academic performance of the Humanities

and Social Sciences Students.

3. Extra-Curricular Activities is not a disadvantage to the Humanities and Social Sciences

Students.

Scope and Limitations

This study focuses on the Extra-Curricular Activities: its effect on the academic

performance among Humanities and Social Sciences Students.

The respondents of the research are the students of Humanities and Social Sciences

Students in Leyte National High School.

This study is conducted for the school year 2016-2017

Significance of the study

This study will benefit the students because students benefit better grades and high

academic performance that will help the students on their academic performance.

This study will benefit the parents of the Students because students playing extra-

curricular activities benefit scholarship in other programs.

Therefore this study is important to provide policy-makers with accurate information

about the value of Extra-Curricular Activities to the Humanities and Social Sciences Students.
CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

One study by Wilson (2009) asserted that students who participates in Extra-Curricular

Activities benefits better grades and develop more skills, but students that has over-scheduled

activities might be tired, stressed and push their selves in pursuing things that a student might

not able to cope up with. And in terms of balancing academic performance, extra-curricular

activities can help the students develop school spirit and gain more friends in community in a

positive manner.

In general an extra-curricular activity has a positive impact to students’ academic

performance but these activities might affect the student’s grades. The student needs to

balance the academic learning and the extra-curricular activities to create a positive situation at

all.

In understanding the benefits of extra-curricular activities the students and parents may

consider how to balance the academics and activities of the positive impact and to know the

participation of extra-curricular activities in the near future of the students.

The latest study by (Gardner, Roth and Brooks-Gunn, 2008) says that “participation in

organized activities during high school is positively associated with educational, civic, and to

some extent, occupational success in adulthood. “(p.9)

Extra-Curricular Activities can impact not only the students’ participation but also the

teacher as a sponsor or a couch. However extra-curricular activities can help their physical

ability to do their task and it can also improve their social ability towards other.
Another study on the topic by (Massoni, 2011) says that extra-curricular activities are

found in different levels in schools in many different forms such as sports, clubs, music, art and

drama. There were students who performed extra-curricular activities and those students who

did not participate were examined due to the difference of the scores of the students. And

those students who participate the said activity benefit higher score than the students who did

not participate.

Students who join the extra-curricular activities participate before the school or after

school and the worst is during weekends that causes the parents to doubt in their children

participating the extra-curricular activities that may help them in many working skills.

In participating extra-curricular activities there are benefits that a student can develop

and can enjoy, they will learn about time managing and prioritizing important things in their

life, it’s important to get in their diverse interests and they learn long term commitments.

Another is being involved in extra-curricular activities helps to raise self-esteem (Burgess)

Sports, music, art and clubs have positive effects in their educational, social and

emotional life. Extra-Curricular Activities serves as student’s goals for their required curriculum

and will gain better grades, behavior, positive aspects to become a successful person these

benefits will let the students enjoy in participating extra-curricular activities.

Another is the parents and students should understand the impact of extra-curricular

activities to student’s life and it is important to know how the activities are influencing

educational career of the student. And it is important to consider connecting with an activity

might affect.
The Latest study by (Massoni, 2011) says that “Extra-Curricular Activities are part of

student’s everyday life. They play important roles in students’ life and they have positive

effects on student’s lives by improving behavior, school performance, school completion,

positive aspects to make successful adults, and social aspects.” (p.4)

Too many extra-curricular activities can harm children’s education prospects. Students

that taking part in clubs and classes outside the school there is a possibility that there grades

will possibly dropped. Students who have five extra-curricular activities get a higher score in

exams than the students who did not participate in extra-curricular activities. And parents

should find a balance between their children’s school work and the extra-curricular activities.

Extracurricular activities are totally voluntary so students that do not want to participate
in them do not have to. For the student that doesn’t want to participate in any extra-curricular

activities will not be pushed to participate in extra-curricular activities unless it is said by the

teachers that they are required to participate for an extra points in their performance especially

for the students who do not always participate in class discussions.

The study of Massoni(2011) said that “Extracurricular activities have many positive

effects on education. The positive effects that extracurricular activities have on students are

behavior, better grades, school completion, positive aspects to become successful adults, and a

social aspect.” (p.2)

Therefore not because it has a positive effect it doesn’t have a negative effect, if the

student will be focusing on the said extra-curricular activity it will lead absences in the student’s

class, he or she might have a low performance in his or her academic performance.

According to Wang and Shiveley(2009) context is extra-curricular activities also believe

that these may affect the students school performance in a negative manner in conflicting time
requirements of the students and competing schedules. It is important to know the result of

the student’s academic performance if it really affects the students’ performance.

Most of the students who participates extra-curricular activities are those students

among poor families because they tend to get a scholarship that offer different programs to go

further in their education. Extra-Curricular Activities is the best investment that the schools

have to help the students among poor families to promote achievement that will lead to college

success.

Students can’t focus on their academics because they are more prioritizing the said

Activities where they think they excel more on Extra-Curricular Activities. The students may

gain additional points but their learnings would not be the same as those who were present

during the actual presentation of the lesson unlike for those who were present, it’s more useful

and they can understand more. And every time the student would be excuse, the student will

be behind the lessons and they need to catch up immediately.

Kimiko Fujita (2004) asserted that the way students spend more time in extra-curricular

activities it can affect their academic performance but extra-curricular activities may improve

students grade point, higher educational aspirations, and reduced absenteeism because

participation in extra-curricular activities improves achievement.

The effects of extra-curricular activities to the academic performance of a students is

they are pressured in both academic performance inside their class and in their extra-curricular.

They are pressured because there are some activities in their academic that are given at the

same time or having the same deadline. Some studies says that student engagement, including
extra-curricular activities has a positive impact on student academic performance, that there is

a positive correlation between student engagement and student learning and persistence.

Extra-Curricular Activities take a large portion of time out of a student’s schedule and

distract student’s school work. In conclusion extra-curricular activities have been help to both

help and hinder to student’s academic performance.

Another study by Halloway (2000) says that students who are in public schools

participates extra-curricular offers scholarship for the students or it increases student’s

performance. Engagement in school extra-curricular activities in linked in decreasing of school

dropouts to students.

The latest study by (Seow, Pan, 2014) reveals that extra-curricular activities participation

did not influence student’s academic performance because it did not affects the student’s

grades point. And it gives more students pursue in both academic and extra-curricular activities

and has an impact to students life, he says “This will extend the commonly examined

determinants beyond prior academic achievement, mathematical aptitude, critical thinking,

age, gender, prior knowledge of accounting and working experience.” (p.13)

Extra-curricular activities can help the student to have a healthy lifestyle especially if he

or she will participate in sports, but not because the student participates in an Extra-Curricular

Activity that doesn’t mean that the student will neglect his studies.

The latest work by Roberts (2006) asserts that participation in extra-curricular activities

might serve as a protective factor. Extra-Curricular Activities are activities that students

participate in where they do not fall in realm of curriculum school and it reduces student’s
behavior problems. Those students that at risk in failure tend to have passing grades because

of the help of extra-curricular activities.

Extra-curricular activities might serve as the protective factor for a student who has a

low performance in academic due in gaining grades in participating in extra-curricular activities

but it may also lead to failing remarks if a student has a good performance in academic but

because of desperate in getting to have a high achievement the student might be focusing

more on extra-curricular activities that will lead to failing grades because he or she did not give

attention anymore in his or her academics.

instrument for collecting the data. All the Humanities and Social Sciences Students were the

respondents. The inquiry was conducted during the school year 2016-2017.

1. What is the effect of extra-curricular activities in the academic performance of the students?

According to the Humanities and Social Sciences Students the effect of extra-curricular

activities on the academic performance of the students are the following: Low performance; It

depends on the student; enhance skills; lack of focus; and nothing.

Furthermore of all the factors above among the Humanities and Social Sciences students

the most effect of extra-curricular activities in the academic performance of the students is the

high grades.

2. Is extra-curricular activities important in the academic performance of the students?

According to the Humanities and Social Sciences here are some factors on how

important extra-curricular activities on their academic performance: not important; and

somehow important.

Furthermore of all the factors above extra-curricular activities are very important on

their academic performance.

3. What is the disadvantages of extra-curricular activities to the Humanities and Social Sciences

student’s academic performance?

According to the Humanities and Social Sciences students the disadvantages of extra-

curricular activities are the following: Time management; poor grades; it depends on the

student; none; high grades; and lack of focus.

Furthermore of all the factors above one issue that matter most that extra-curricular

can affect students’ academic performance is due to absences.

Conclusion

Thus, therefore I conclude that there are many effects of extra-curricular activities in the

academic performance of the Humanities and Social Sciences Students. The factors that affect

the academic performance of the students are: Low performance, time management, and lack

of focus. With the high grades the students have balanced well their extra-curricular activities

and their academic performance.

With this, the researcher concluded that extra-curricular activities can be means of

improving grades of the Humanities and Social Sciences students of Leyte National High School

for the School Year 2016-2017.
