Preparation of Disturbed and Undisturbed Soil Samples

I. Introduction

Understanding the characteristics and properties of soils is critical in many

fields, especially in civil engineering, as it plays a vital role in determining whether a
certain site is suitable or unsuitable for construction.
According to Das (2017), the preparation of disturbed and undisturbed soil
samples is important in determining the physical/mechanical and chemical properties
of soil. Soil samples are collected from the field and undergoes laboratory testing to
determine its different properties. Soil samples can be disturbed or undisturbed.
Disturbed samples are those samples in which their chemical and physical properties
have changed significantly, while undisturbed samples are samples which have
conditions that are comparable to the soil in-situ (Nikeetasharma, 2020).
In this laboratory exercise, the researchers will describe the techniques for
preparing soil for both disturbed and undisturbed samples obtained from the soil
around the vicinity of the Visayas State University’s Olympic sized pool. Test pits and
boring will be used in obtaining the disturbed and undisturbed soil samples. ???

II. Learning Outcomes

1. This laboratory exercise aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills
required in preparing soil samples accurately for laboratory analysis. (paraphrase)
2. Familiarize the tools and equipment needed in preparing soil samples.
3. To be able to appropriately prepare disturbed and undisturbed soil samples for
laboratory analysis.

III. Equipment or Apparatus

• Shovel/Spade
• Plastic Bags
• Auger
• Measuring Tape
• Budlong??
• Weighing Scale ??

IV. Procedures

Soil Sampling
1. Identify and indicate a site needed for the test pit.
2. Clear the site/area of any debris such as leaves, roots and grass.
3. Mark the test pit???
4. Excavate the soil using a shovel/spade and budlong until desired depth is
acquired.
5. Collect chuchu
