SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study focuses on the effects of extra-curricular activities of the academic performance of grade12
students. This study considers the students information such as their name(Optional), sex,age and section.

The researchers limited the study to the grade12 students in San Simon High School who will be asked about
the effects extra-curricular activities to the academic performance of students each of the respondents was
given a questionnaire to answer. We randomly selected 75 students to answer the questionnaire provided.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Research indicates that participation extracurricular effects students academic performance. More
specifically, studies have been conducted assessing the effects of specific extracurricular activities
on academic performance. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not the activities in
which grade 12 students in San Simon High School choose to participate have an effect on their
academic performance. Playing sports, watching television, and participating in community service
improve academic performance, while playing a musical instrument does not imp rove academic
performance according to us. Therefore,it was concluded that extracurricular activities affect
academic performance and that the effect depends on the specific activities in which the student is
involved

Extracurricular activity is an outside activity that is not related in academic. Merriam -Webster
defines extra-curricular as an "outside one's regular work, responsibilities and routine." If applied on a
students’ context, this will be the non-academic activities that they, the students, engage in based on
their interest.

We found positive associations between extracurricular participation and academic achievement. Although
researchers agree that extracurricular activities do, in fact, influence academic performance, the specific
effect that various activities produce is debated. One study, conducted by the National Educational
Longitudinal Study, found that “participation in some activities improves achievement, while participation in
others diminishes achievement”. Many extracurricular activities have proven to be beneficial in building and
strengthening academic achievement, even if the activities are not obviously related to academic subjects.

Nowadays, students also learn other things through extra-curricular activities.Extracurricular activities are
not directly related to the purpose of school education.Which is to teach students life.Whether it is
academically or socially, but there are still a battle between education or to the need for extracurricular
activities.Being serious in studies you aren’t healthy and fit, because you are focused on your studies you
have no time on your self to do anything what you want and also your health will be affected. To avoid this
our academic activities in school includes physical training so that in every things that comes to
us.However, staying fit and unaffected is just one advantage of extra-curricular activities.

The role of extracurricular activities in a student’s, social life is important as their academic for their
development. There is pressure on students to perform well and to get high grade. Extracurricular activities
can aim students with many of the skills future employers will be looking for.Extracurricular activities can
help students succeed in much more than just their known. The value for extracurricular activities can keep
them with the purpose and positive,we also learn important skills, time management, discipline, time work,
and problem solving trough extracurricular activities.

One of the philosophies behind extracurricular activities was that they should, wherever at all possible,
“grow out of curricular activities and return to curricular activities to enrich them” (Millard, 1930, p. 12).
Eventually people, including educators, began to see the benefits of extracurricular activities, but it took a
while to inure themselves to them. The way students choose to send their extracurricular activities affect
their academic performance. It is not easy to traditional instruction that impacts academic achievement. A
common problem for many students involved extracurricular activities in they take too much should make
schedule in advance of semester to balance school work.

It is obvious that extracurricular activities have an impact on academic performance and education ever
since.

INTRODUCTION

Extracurricular Activities play an important role in today’s secondary education programs(Holland and
Andre.1987).When one considers the large number of activities available, one realizes the diversity of the
programs.Included are athletics,publication,students government,fine arts,academic clubs,service
organization, and special interest activities. There has been considerable amount of research devoted. To
studying the relationship between student involvement. The development perspective considers extra
curricular activities necessary to the total development of the student in today’s school.

According to march (1992) activities allows student to the development skills such as leadership,
sportmanship, self dicipline, self confidence and the ability to handle competitive situation.Extra curricular
activities offer an opportunity to interact. The developmental minded believe that these skills would be
imposible or vey difficult to develop in classroom setting.

The academic perspective that time away from the classroom decreases the students chances for success
even those activities that don’t require loss of classroom time are percieved to take away study time so that
extra curricular activities have a positive and negative effects when it comes ro the students academic
performance.
With these , students will be aware about the importance and relationship between extra curricular activities
and students academic performance if there is a significant difference in grade point between students
involve in extra curricular activities and students not involved in extra curricular activities.
