Problem Setting

After the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan last November 8, 2013 which is known to be the strongest
storm to make landfall in the world (Samenow and Mcnoldy 2013), housing units are constructed for
the typhoon victims but the typhoon victims urge the government for the housing units to be replaced
due to its substandard quality (Ronalodo Reyes May 11, 2018).

Problem

What are the needed factors in order to solve or improve the short coming of the housing developments
of the Yolanda Typhoon victims in Tacloban?

 What are the shortcomings of the current housing projects in the Philippines?
 What are the differences between local and foreign housing projects?
 What ideas can be derived form foreign projects that can be applied in local housing
development projects?

Goals and Objectives

The goal of this study is to have additional knowledge to come up a paper on what are the sustainable
and disaster resilient materials and building technology to be used on the housing projects in Tacloban.

 To conduct case studies of the current state of Tacloban City through computer and library
research
 To recommend design solutions and building materials to be used for the housing project
 To recognize the difference between local and foreign housing projects resiliency wise

Hypothesis

With careful review and analysis of the initial research, the research came up with this hypothesis: Some
of the existing housing projects in Tacloban City are substandard and in poor conditions. Improving
future housing projects by recommending design solutions and assessing reliable building materials for
Tacloban Yolanda victim and even to designers and planners. Which should lead to advancement in
building and designing disaster-resilient housing projects.

Significance of the Study

Results from this study can serve as a guide which can help designers gain more knowledge in designing
Disaster resilient housing and on what materials can be used for each housing unit in Tacloban.

 This study also proves beneficial to engineers and contractors in knowing what type of disaster
resilient housing unit can be the most efficient to erect in terms of the materials used and the
time needed for the construction of each housing unit.
 Findings from this paper can also provide guidelines and recommendations for future developers
achieve their goals in both short term and in long term which is to provide immediate shelter for
the disaster victims in Tacloban as well as provide Disaster resilient housing units.
