THE IMPACT OF CRESCENTIA CUJETE’S LEAVES AGAISNT THE CHANGE OF MDA LEVEL IN LIVER AND

BLOOD OF SPRAGUE DAWLEY RATS THAT INDUCED BY HYPOXIA

Background : Hypoxia is a condition which the partial pressure of oxygen content inside
organs, tissue, or cells decrease below normal level. Hypoxia will increase the production of Reactive
oxygen species (ROS) and the increase of ROS will cause oxidative stress that can cause damage in
liver. To prevent it, antioxidant is needed. MDA is the final product of Polyunsaturated acid
peroxidation that and it can be measured as marker of oxidative stress. Recent studies showed that
Calabash leaves have high antioxidant capacity and contain fenolic and flavonoid which can act as
antioxidant.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to assess the changes of MDA level in liver and blood of

Sprague Dawley rats

Method: Sprague - Dawley rats will be randomly divided into 8 groups where 4 groups act as
negative control and other 4 as positive control ( will be given Calabash leaves extract). Four
groups consist 1 control and the other 3 will be induced by hypoxia for 3, 7, and 14 days
respectively. MDA levels in liver and blood of the rats will be measured.

Result: The result showed significant increase of MDA level in liver and blood of rats that
induced by hypoxia for 3, 7 , and 14 days. Positive control MDA level is lower compared to
the negative control.
