ELECTRIC POWER SOURCE OF T72-B1 TANK

General

The two main electrical power sources of T72-B1 tank are :

a. starter storage batteries:

Its purpose: - 1. To supply the consumers with electric power when the engine is not operating.
2. it supplies the consumers when the generator does not produce enough output.
3. it supplies electric power for the engine electric starting systems.

b. the starter generator (in generator duty):

it is used to supply electric power for all consumers ,as well as charging the batteries when the engine is
operating.

STARTER STORAGE BATTERIES

It is a power source and there are four lead acid batteries ,6CTэH- 140M or 6CT-140P or 12CT-85P installed
in T72-B1 tank . Each battery has 12v or 24v and its 140A.H or 85A.H and the mass of each with electrolyte
62kg or72kg respectively. Each battery has six or twelve 2-volt separate cells arranged and connected in series
by cell connector. Each cell is provided with a hole for filling with electrolyte which is closed with plug.
provided in the plugs are vent holes for escape of gas. It has positive and negative terminals covered by
protective box . The storage batteries are connected in series and parallel in the tank; in this case their total
voltage is 24v total capacities are 280A.H and 170A.H. During starting the engine with the batteries the
connection is changed in to series i.e.48v by starter relay PCГ -10M1. But this connection is only for starting
and all other consumers are connected to 24v. The batteries are installed in the tank at the left of the driver’s
seat.

Storage batteries removing procedures

1. turn off the battery switch;

2. Remove the tool box , PKT machine gun case and the first aid kit case installed on the batteries
shroud ;
3. Set the driver’s seat in the lower position and secure it in this position;
4. Remove the driver’s seat back rest and the cushion;
5. Unscrew the wing nut securing upper shroud and remove the shroud;
6. Remove lower protective shroud of the storage batteries;
7. Remove terminal protective box from the storage batteries;
8. Disconnect the wires and connectors from the lead out terminals of the batteries; insulate the ends of
the disconnected wires;
9. Install terminal protective boxes on the storage batteries;
10. Turn out bolts , remove locks securing the storage batteries in position;
11. Remove the storage batteries with the basket from the tank through the driver’s hatch or through the
emergency escape hatch.
Storage battery installation procedure

1. Turn off the battery switch;

2. Install the storage batteries in the rack;
3. Secure the baskets with locks ;
4. Remove the terminal protective boxes from the storage batteries ;
5. Connect the wires and the connectors to the storage batteries in accordance with the instruction plate
or connection diagram on the storage battery shroud ; see that the nuts and bolts securing the wire
and connectors the lead out terminals are tightened up;
6. Install the terminal protective boxes on the storage batteries;
7. Install and secure the lower protective shroud of the storage batteries ;
8. Install and secure the upper shroud;
9. Install the tool boxes PKT machine gun case and the first aid kit case ;
10. Install the driver’s seat cushion ;
11. Install the driver’s seat back rest.

The main rules to ensure normal operation of the batteries

1. Keep the batteries always clean and periodically wipe them with clean waste cloth soaked with 10%
solution of ammonia or of calcium soda ; then wipe the batteries with waste cloth wetted in water
and wipe them dry with clean cloth;
2. In case of necessity , clean the vent holes in the storage batteries plugs;
3. Check the attachment of the storage batteries to the rack , reliability of wires and cell connectors
with the lead out terminal;
4. Maintain the normal level of electrolyte ; the level of the electrolyte above the cell plate should be
from 10 to 12mm; in order to restore the normal level of the electrolyte it is allowed to add distilled
water only and then to charge the batteries from the starter generator for 10-15minutes;
5. Watch the charging current by the voltammeter with the batteries charged , the value of the
charging current should not exceed 20A,after the engine has been operating for 10-15minute at
rotational speed of 1250- 2000r/min; the permissible value of charging current is 130A (such a value
is indicative of heavy discharging of the batteries) ;
6. Do not allow the batteries to be discharged more than 50% in summer and more than 25% in winter ;
7. Start the starter generator (in starter duty) by short time switching for not more than 8sec ;repeated
switching should be done in 15 sec.
8. At low negative temperature (below -25) it is recommended to store the storage batteries in heated
premises.
