3. Project Overview / Background:

Introduction:-
With rising prices of fuel theft has become a very common incidence. From economic point of view a system is
devised that will take care of these practices . Fuel theft is happening on parking and sometimes driving
insecurity places. This system has GSM modem which send SMS and with the help of microcontroller
this message will display on LCD.

In this system we have use level sensor to detect the petrol level in tank. If the level goes below certain
level then this sensor gives a particular signal to microcontroller. Fair level of fuel and drastic change
of fuel level which we measure using level sensor. If there is large change in fuel level, the level sensor
will sense the actual level of fuel and with the help of microcontroller display it on LCD.

Block Diagram:-
PIC 18f458 microcontroller:
PIC (Peripheral Interface Controller) is an 8 bit Microcontroller used in this system and it is
the heart of the overall system. We have used PIC18F458. Various functions of
microcontroller are -
 To calculate the variation in liquid level.
 To display various information in LCD display.
 To send SMS when there is change in liquid level.

LCD Display:
It is known as Liquid Crystal Display. It displays various messages like “Fuel theft detection” and
displays variation in fuel level of tank in the form of percentage %. It also displays variation in petrol
level. We have used 16 by 2 alphanumeric display. LCD is mainly important for testing the project,
however in actual use LCD is optional.

GSM Modem:
GSM modem is used to send messages. We have to insert a GSM simcard into this GSM modem.
Microcontroller sends the commands for sending SMS to the GSM modem.

Liquid level sensor:

This is an important block at the input side of microcontroller. The function of liquid level is to detect
the variation in fuel level and it gives variable output voltage as per the variations in level. This liquid
level sensor can be used for any type of liquid. So it can be used for petrol as well as diesel or in some
cases it can be used for water level detection as well.

HALL Effect sensor:

Here the main principle of Hall Effect sensor is it converts magnetic energy into electrical signal. In
this system we are measuring rpm using Hall Effect sensor. Small magnet chip is attached to
the shaft of DC motor and Hall Effect sensor is placed in front of DC motor. As DC motor start
rotating, the magnet also rotates and according to that Hall Effect sensor measure rpm and send analog
signal to microcontroller. The output of sensor is analog, microcontroller convert that analog signal
into digital signal then that signal is display on LCD.

MAX 232:
MAX 232 is used for serial communication between GSM and microcontroller.GSM operates and
microcontroller operates on different voltage level. So for making them compatible for use, we
connect MAX232 IC. MAX232 operates on RS-232 protocol which provides serial communication
between two devices.
DC Motor:
Here we are using DC motor to calculate the rpm. Hall Effect is placed on the shaft of DC motor as
motor rotates, Hall Effect sensor sense the each rotation and according to that microcontroller get the
input from Hall effect sensor in the form of pulses.

Hardware Used:-
• Microcontroller -PIC18F458 (40 pin IC)
• Liquid level sensor
• Hall effect sensor
• DC motor
• LCD display (16*2 alphanumeric display)
• GSM module (SIM 900)

Advantages:-
1. This system is easy to use.
2. This system is fully automated and it does not require
any human attention.
3. Large change in the fuel tank is immediately detected.
4. Information of balance of fuel remaining in the tank.

Applications:-
1. Used in various industries which have bus or caps for their employees.
2. This system can be fitted in transportation buses to detect the petrol theft.
3. This system can be used in car, bikes and all vehicles.

Future Scope:-
1. We can implement this system using GPS for tracking the location of particular vehicle.
2. We can provide voice feedback system.
3. We can add vibration sensor to the car or bike. In case when the bike or car locked and somebody is
try to open the door or open the bike lock then vibration will be produced and vibration sensor can
sense this vibrations and turn on the buzzer.
