Objective:

To ensure that all glass and hard plastic is handled in such a way that damage / breakages and the resulting risk of physical
contamination is minimised. In the event of damage / breakages, the appropriate action is established to contain the risk and ensure
the customer receives a safe product.
Method:
 Prevention of Contamination
o A documented checklist of all glass & glass-like materials is updated when appropriate. Details of location and condition
needs to be included.
 Glass Minimization
o Suitable measures are in place to ensure that all glass in production areas including packaging stores and goods receiving
(and where food materials are exposed) are minimized.
o Raw materials in glass containers are not accepted (unless totally unavoidable). New equipment and changes to existing
equipment are fully reviewed to ensure that glass is whenever practical eliminated and that any hard plastic used to
appropriate to reducing breakage hazards.
o Due to contamination potential, glass food and drinks containers (including Thermos type flasks) are not to be brought
into the factory site.
 Protection of Glass
o All glass windows opening to production areas are protected by a shatter-resistant security film.
o All light fittings are protected against damage. Fluorescent tubes, including tubes in electronic fly-killing units, are
provided with a protective shatter resistant outer sheath or housed in a protective fitting.
 Monitoring of all Glass and Glass-like materials
o All glass & glass-like materials are identified and monitored daily via the Glass and Hard Plastic Checklist as well as weekly
via the Housekeeping Audit Checklist and monthly via the Site Maintenance Checklist. A Glass & Hard Plastic Breakage
Procedure is in place and regular training is done.
 Glass Replacement
o Extreme care is taken during replacement of glass. Glass replacement, where possible, is carried out outside production
hours.
o Records are kept of any glass replacement work in production areas (refer Maintenance Request).
o Glass is to be disposed of in designated “Glass waste” container in a demarcated area.
 Customer Complaints
o In the event of a customer complaint received pertaining to glass, an immediate thorough and documented investigation
of the incident will be done, and recorded as a NCA.
o A sample will be sent to a recognized glass analysis laboratory for source identification.
