Describing Trends

When describing graphs or tables, it is important to describe the overall trend. This means describing the
shape of the visual which may include if the figures:
 Show a rise
 Show a fall
 Stay the same

Below are examples of some useful language for describing trends. Using these can improve your score
for Lexical Resource.

Where would the following words be placed on the above tables?

dramatically jump halve rapid plummet


downturn trough steep peak slump
gradually sharp soar surge steady
boost gain shrink rocket diminish

Noun: a word that refers to a person, place, thing, event, substance or quality e.g.'nurse', 'cat', 'party', 'oil' and 'poverty'.
Verb: a word or phrase that describes an action, condition or experience
Adjectives describe a noun or pronoun.
Adverbs describe a verb, adjective, or other adverb.
