DRAINAGE CHARACTERISTICS: The Balasan river basin is a sixth order stream, having average bi-

furcation ratio of 4.08 reflecting strong structural control over drainage pattern. The stream frequency and
drainage density of the basin are 3.12 stream/sq km and 2.34 km/ sq km respectively. The basin has 7.29
value of infiltration number (Faniran, 1968) and 0.2139 value of overland flow. These values indicate
moderate run off in the basin. Although the higher run off occurs in the upper parts (area lies above 300
metre contour) of the basin due to presence of impermeable lithology.
