    This laboratory exercise involved determining the particle size distribution of a soil sample through sieve analysis. The sample was placed on a series of sieves with decreasing mesh sizes and the mass of soil retained on each sieve was measured. This allowed the experimenter to calculate the cumulative mass and percentage of particles retained on and passing through each sieve. The results were then plotted on a graph showing the percent finer by weight versus particle diameter to visualize the full particle size distribution of the sample.
