1-) Water polluted with 0.5 ( ) of silver is dumped into a storage tank at rate of 5 (𝑚𝑖𝑛)
𝐿

and is absorbed into the ground at a rate of 1 (𝑚𝑖𝑛) . Suppose that the tank begins with 16 L
of clean water, and the polluted water stops being added after 60 minutes.

a) Give a differantial equation (with initial value) for M(t), the amount of silver in the
tank at a time t.
b) Solve the differantial equation from (a) to get a formula for M(t) until the time when
the tank is full. (at t=60)
c) Having too much silver in your body causes a condition called argyria, where silver
enters your skin and hair, and your body permanently turns blue. An average weight
person drinking 3 L of water a day will turn blue if the silver concentration is above

0.33 𝐿 . If you regularly drink the polluted water from the tank after it is full, will
you turn blue?

2-) Find the general solution for the following differantial equation,

𝑑𝑦 2𝑦𝑥𝑒 𝑥 + 2𝑥 2 𝑦𝑒 𝑥
=
𝑑𝑥 2𝑥 2 𝑒 𝑥 − 6𝑦 3 𝑥

3-) Solve the following initial value problem,

1 𝑥
𝑦′ + 𝑦 = 3 , 𝑦(1) = 2
2𝑥 𝑦

4-) A bullet is fired perpendicularly into a plate at an initial speed of 𝑣0 = 100 𝑚⁄𝑠𝑒𝑐. When
the bullet exits the plate, its speed is 𝑣1 = 80 𝑚⁄𝑠𝑒𝑐. It is known that the thickness of the
plate is 𝑏 = 0.1 𝑚 and the resistant force of the plate on the bullet is proportional to the
square of the speed of the bullet, i.e. , 𝑅 = 𝛽𝑣 2 . Determine the time T that the bullet takes to
pass through the plate.
