A) DEFINITIONS AND EVALUATION

1. What is the differential equation of the family of parabolas having their vertices at the origin and their foci on
the x-axis?
2. Find the equation of the family of curves at every point of which the tangent line has a slope of 2y.
3. Find the general solution to sinxcos2ydx + cos2xdy = 0
4. Which of the following is an exact DE and solve?
a. (x2+1)dx-xdy = 0 b . xdy+(3x-2y)dx = 0 с. 2xydx+(2+x2)dy = 0 d . x2ydy-ydx = 0
2 x
5. Solve the linear equation dy/dx - 2y/x = x e
6. Solve the following differential equations;
a) (D2 - 5D + 6)y = 0 b) (D2 - 4D +4)y = 0 c) (D2 + 4)y=0 d) (D^4 - 1)y(t) = 0
7. Solve the differential equation
a) (D^2 - 3D + 2)y = 16 b) D^2 y-y = x^2 c) y" + y = sin x
B) ORTHOGONAL TRAJECTORY,OT
1. Find the orthogonal trajectories of the family of parabolas y 2 = 2x+c.
2. Find the orthogonal trajectories to r = asinθ.
C) EXPONENTIAL LAW OF CHANGE, ELC
1. A certain radioactive substance has a half-life of 3 years. If 10 grams are present initially, how much of the
substance remain after 9 years?
2. Carbon extracted from an ancient skull contained only one-sixth as much C 14 as carbon extracted from the
present
day bone. How old is the skull?
3. The time rate of change of a rabbit population P is proportional to the square root of P. At time t = 0 (months)
the population numbers 100 rabbits and is increasing at the rate of 20 rabbits per month. How many rabbits will
there be one year later?
D) NEWTON'S LAW OF COOLING
1. A steel ball at 120 deg C cools in 20 minutes to 80 deg C in a room at 25 deg C. Find the temperature of the
ball
after half an hour.
2. Just before midday the body of apparent homicide victim is found in a room that is kept at constant temperature
of 70°F. At 12 noon the temperature of the body is 80°F and 1P.M. it is 75°F. Assume that the temperature of the
body at the time of death was 98.6°F and that it has cooled in accord with Newton's law. What was the time of
death?
E) CHEMICAL SOLUTION IN TANK
1. A tank initially contains 400 gallons of brine in which 100 pounds of salt are dissolved. Pure water is running
into the tank at the rate of 20 gallons per minute, and the mixture (which is kept uniform by stirring) is drained off
at the same rate. How many pounds of salt remain in the tank after 30 minutes?
2. A tank contains 100L of brine with 50kg of salt. If fresh water runs into the take at the rate of 3L/min and
runs out at the rate of 2L/min, find the amount of salt in the tank after 1hr.
F) UNSTEADY FLOW OF FLUID THROUGH AN ORIFICE
1. A hemispherical bowl has a top radius of 4 ft and at time t = 0 is full of water. At that moment a circular hole of
diameter 1 in is opened at the bottom of the tank. How long will it take for all the water to drain from the tank?
2. A water tank has the shape obtained by revolving the curve y = x 4/3 around the y axis. A plug at the bottom is
removed at 12 noon, when the depth of water in the tank is 12 ft. At 1 P.M. the depth of water is 6 ft. When will
the
tank be empty?
G) ACCELERATION AND THE NEWTON'S SECOND LAW OF MOTION
1. An arrow is shot straight upward from the ground with an initial velocity of 160 ft/s. It experiences both the
deceleration of gravity and the deceleration v2/800 due to air resistance. How high in the air does it go?
2. A body falls from rest. If the resistance of the air is proportional to the speed, and if the limiting speed is 160
ft/s,
find the speed in ft/s at the end of 5 seconds.
I) THE WRONSKIAN
1. Given are the functions e^x, e^2x and e^3x which are linearly independent. Find the Wronskian.
