Natural Disasters
1. Damaging Winds

Strong thunderstorm winds can come from a number of different

processes. Most thunderstorm winds that cause damage at the
ground are a result of outflow generated by a thunderstorm
downdraft. Damaging winds are classified as those exceeding
50-60 mph.

2. Drought or drouth Is a natural disaster of below-

average precipitation in a given region, resulting in prolonged
shortages in the water supply, whether atmospheric, surface
water or ground water. A drought can last for months or years,
or may be declared after as few as 15 days. It can have a
substantial impact on the ecosystem and agriculture of the
affected region and harm to the local economy

3. Tsunamis
A tsunami can kill or injure people and damage or destroy
buildings and infrastructure as waves come in and go out. A
tsunami is a series of enormous ocean waves caused by
earthquakes, underwater landslides, volcanic eruptions, or
asteroids.

4. Earthquakes
An earthquake is the sudden, rapid shaking of the earth, caused
by the breaking and shifting of underground rock. Earthquakes
can cause buildings to collapse and cause heavy items to fall,
resulting in injuries and property damage

5. Sinkholes
are common where the rock below the land surface is
limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds, or rocks that can naturally
be dissolved by groundwater circulating through them. As the
rock dissolves, spaces and caverns develop underground.
Man-Made Types of Disasters
1.Hazardous materials
come in the form of explosives, flammable and
combustible substances, poisons and radioactive materials.
Hazards can occur during production, storage,
transportation, use or disposal. You and your community
are at risk if a chemical is used unsafely or released in
harmful amounts into the environment where you live,
work or play.

2. Chemical agents
are poisonous vapors, aerosols, liquids and solids that have toxic
effects on people, animals or plants. While potentially lethal,
chemical agents are difficult to deliver in lethal concentrations
because they dissipate rapidly outdoors and are difficult to produce.

3. Bioterrorism
Biological agents are organisms or toxins that can kill or
incapacitate people, livestock and crops. A biological attack is the
deliberate release of germs or other biological substances that can
make you sick. There are three basic groups of biological agents
that could likely be used as weapons: bacteria, viruses and toxins.
Biological agents can be dispersed by spraying them into the air,
person-to-person contact, infecting animals that carry the disease to
humans and by contaminating food and water.

4. Explosions
Explosive devices can be highly portable, using vehicles
and humans as a means of transport. They are easily
detonated from remote locations or by suicide bombers.

5. Nuclear Explosion
Nuclear explosions can cause significant damage and casualties
from blast, heat, and radiation it is most dangerous in the first few
hours after the detonation when it is giving off the highest levels
of radiation.
