SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
This course focuses on the application of scientific
knowledge and the solution of practical problems in a
physical environment. It is designed to bridge the gap
between theoretical science and daily living.
PHILIPPINES: A COUNTRY PRONE
TO NATURAL DISASTERS
The Philippines has experienced from an
inexhaustible number of deadly earthquakes,
volcanic eruption, and other natural disasters
due to its location along the Ring of Fire.
WHY ARE WE
DISASTER PRONE?
TYPHOON BELT
A typhoon belt is a large region in the Pacific Ocean
where a lot of Earth's earthquakes and volcanic
eruptions happen. This is also called the Ring of Fire.
RING OF FIRE
The Ring of Fire, also referred to as the Circum-Pacific
Belt, is a path along the Pacific Ocean characterized by
active volcanoes and frequent earthquakes.

2023 WORLD RISK INDEX
According to a 2023 study, the Philippines
was the country with the highest natural
disaster risk in the world.
The reasons for the Philippines'
vulnerability and high risk are its location
in the ring of fire and typhoon belt in the
Pacific Ocean, where many earthquakes
and volcanic eruptions occur. Poverty and
underdevelopment also make the county
vulnerable to disasters.
DISASTER
It is a sudden event that causes great harm injury and destruction and
devastation to life and property.
It disrupts the usual course of life causing both physical and emotional
distress as well as an intense feeling of helplessness and hopelessness.
DISRUPTION
There is a break or interruption or problem in
an otherwise normal flow of life for people or
the community

SERIOUS DISRUPTION
When it causes large-scale damage to
people and property. These damages must
be so widespread that the affected
community don't have the ability to manage
on their own.
RISK REDUCTION
RESOURCE MANUAL
“Disasters are
emergencies that
cannot be handled
by those affected
without outside
assistance.”
RISK REDUCTION
RESOURCE MANUAL
People need outside help from
other people from the
government or the local
government units or aids from
other countries to be able to
stand back again and resume
their normal lives before the
disaster happened
PEOPLE

There is a threat to
life injury diseases,
emotional and
mental instability
and in worst cases
death when
disaster strikes.
PROPERTY

The uncountable
damage to property
loss of assets, social
and economic
disruptions, and
environmental
destruction can
happen during
disaster.

natural processes or forces, resulting in significant damage,
destruction, and loss of life.

These events occur without human intervention and can have severe
impacts on the environment, infrastructure, and communities.

EXAMPLES
MAN-MADE DISASTERS
Man-made disasters are the result of man's negligence,
errors, or intention.
Man-made disasters are subdivided into three categories
MAN MADE DISASTER

Social disaster or
Technological or Transportation
disasters induced
industrial disasters disasters
entirely by human
Technological or Industrial Disasters
Unregulated industrialization
and inadequate safety
standards increase the risk for
industrial disaster.

Leaks of Hazardous materials

Accidental Explosions Bridge or Road Collapses
Infrastructure Collapses
Transportation Disasters
Disasters associated with
mechanized modes of
transport: road, rail, marine,
and air resulting to loss of life
and major damage to
properties.
Social Disaster

Disasters induced entirely by human. Large numbers of

people are is placed from their homes due to the lack
of personal safety and the disruption of basic
infrastructure including food distribution, water,
electricity, and sanitation, or communities are left
stamped and isolated in their own homes unable to
access assistance.
Social Disaster
Bombs or Explosion
Release of Chemical Materials
Release of Biological Agents
Release of Radioactive Agents
