THE BALVIKAS GURU – THE BEACON AND THE SCULPTOR
SARVADHARMA SYMBOL

All of us are familiar with this emblem which shows the symbols that represent the major religions of the world with the
lamp in the middle. Bhagawan himself designed this Sarva Dharma emblem which brings out the aim and goal of all the
religions.
SARVADHARMA SYMBOL
Swami says that the central truth of all religions is "God", who is the perfect embodiment of love, grace and compassion.
"Ekam Sat Viprah Bahuda Vadanthi"- God is one, though the wise speak of Him in many ways.
Religion belongs to the region of the heart. So this emblem signifies the Harmony of all faiths. The small leaves around the
religions represent the values Sathya, Dharma, Shanthi, Prema and Ahimsa which form the basis for these religions.
So, religions show us the path to lead a value based life.
Our dear Swami always tells us a small story- "Oka China Katha", also some incidents from the lives of great persons to drive
home the values. Now, from the following stories and the incidents from the lives of great people, let us observe few values
highlighted by these religions.

5 ELEMENTS – A DIVINE GIFT

The Divine reveals the glory and

greatness of this universe through
‘Prakriti’ or Nature. Continuous change
is the very nature of this creation. The
whole universe is made up of 5
elements. There is a harmonious
balance between these elements.
Nature works constantly to maintain
this balance. This is the Law of Nature.

The Entire cosmic creation begins with

the creation of “PANCHA BHOOTAS” or
the “FIVE ELEMENTS”- Prithvi, Jal, Agni,
Vayu & Akash. The five elements have
their individual characteristics. They
correspond to the five faculties of
Shabdha, Sparsha, Roopa, Rasa and

Every individual has these five distinct

What Swami has said about the shloka Satsanghathve....

During the Summer Course Bhagwan gave discourse on

selected Shlokas a from Bhaja Govindam.
For the above shloka Swami explained with these nice
examples which we can understand properly.

 A man is selling milk for ₹2 a cup.

 Another man is selling water for ₹1 a cup.
 Now if we mix 1 cup water in the pot of milk.
 The man will still sell it for ₹2 a cup.
 So the value of water goes up.
 But if we mix 1cup of milk in the pot of water,
 NOBODY WILL BUY THE WATER FOR ₹1 A CUP.

HERE MILK IS LIKE GOOD COMPANY AND WATER IS LIKE BAD COMPANY.
A BAD PERSON IN GOOD COMPANY BECOMES GOOD. AND A GOOD PERSON IN
BAD COMPANY BECOMES BAD

Relevance

ANOTHER EXAMPLE SWAMI GIVES:
We all know that if we keep water in a mud pot after some time the level
of water will slowly become less.
But if we keep this same mud pot with water, in another big vessel
containing water, the level of water in mud pot will not come down.
THE MUD POT IS LIKE A GOOD PERSON WITH WATER WHICH IS LIKE GOOD
QUALITIES. THE VESSEL WITH WATER IS LIKE SATHSANGHA OR GOOD

PRANAYAMAM PRATYAHARAM
Pranaayaamam Pratyaaharam
Nityaanitya Vivekavicharam
Jaapyasametha samaadhi vidhaanam
Kurvavadhaanam Mahadavadhaanam
Shankara asks us to follow
these 5 practices:

 Pranayama
 Pratyahara
 Nitya Anitya Viveka Vicharam
 Japa
 Samadhi.
Pranayama

 Pranayama : pranayama means breath control.

 "Prana" is Breath or vital energy responsible for life in the body.
 "ayama" means control.
 SoPranayama in simple terms is "Control of Breath".
 It also means control over all our life's activities
 We interact with the environment
everyday.
 Our every interaction with the
world needs to be carefully done
 Why?
 in order to avoid loss of energy
into unproductive channels.
 Our intellect does this regulation
 We become more aware of our
thoughts, feelings and actions.
SENSE/SELF CONTROL

 PRATYAHARA :SENSE CONTROL

 Our senses are wonderful tools, but
they can also pull our attention
here, there, and everywhere.
 Pratyahara is withdrawal of the
senses, having control over them ,
using them well, rather than being
distracted by them.
 We learn to stay away from
activities that are not good for you
 Pratyahara helps you to mentally
withdraw your senses from the
world so that you can look within.
• It is compared to a turtle
withdrawing its limbs into its shell
the turtle’s shell is the mind and
the senses are the limbs.
NITYA ANITYA VIVEKA VICHARAM

 With the mind withdrawn, our

intellect is able to know what is
Real and what is Unreal.
 What is Truth what is Un-truth.
 What is Permanent and what is
Temporary.
 Without this withdrawal, you waste
time doing unnecessary things.
Then we have little or no time and
energy for important goals.
Buddha’s Four Sights

 These 4 sights made Prince

Siddhartha leave the palace
to find the answer to what is
temporary and what is
permanent.
 He searched for the truth
and found it.
 And he became the Buddha.
Japa : Meditation
 . When you practice the above exercises,
the mind gets meditative by nature as it
has no attraction for the world. It is free
of desire. It seeks fulfillment within.
 Such a fully prepared mind is given a
point of concentration, a mantra to
repeat. While the mind repeats the
thought, the intellect is acutely aware
and in command, not allowing the mind
to slip to any other thought. Thus you
are totally focussed on one thought. At
this stage you stop the chant. The
thought flow is broken. The mind which
is a flow of thoughts gets extinct.
 The intellect which has been
discriminating between thought and
silence now dissolves in silence.
 Example of how one needs to tune into
TV channels to view a programme.
Samadhi

• Samadhi = Sama+Dhi
• Sama = Same
• Dhi = Mind
• So samadhi means being equal
minded.
• Example of Rama. Rajyabhishekh
and Vanvasa.
• Whether it is hot or cold.
• Whether praised or blamed.
• At the end of the verse, Shankara
asks us to go on the spiritual path
with care and patience.
• It is a slow process and requires
consistent application.
• Be patient with yourself, make
gradual changes and the results are
bound to follow.
• Example of Ant moving towards
sugar.
• Hare and Tortoise story.
Swami’s sayings

• SAI – See Always Inside.

• Master the Mind and be a Mastermind.
• Bend the body, Mend the senses, End the Mind.
• Slow & Steady wins the Race.
• Start Early, Drive Slowly, Reach Safely.
• Less luggage, more comfort, makes travel a pleasure.
• Voice of God can be heard in depths of silence. SAI+Lens =
Silence.
Suggested group activities

• Have a group discussion with the children about what they

need to do to go on a picnic the next day. Then ask how will
they feel if the picnic is cancelled. Discuss.
• Divide children into pairs.
• Ask 1 child from each pair to stand at 1 end of the room.
The other child from each pair stands at other end of room.
Children at other end of room are given a message each to
tell their partner. Each child will be given a different
message.
• The partner has to concentrate carefully to listen to only his
message as all messages will be read out at same time.

TO A STUDENT,
For his studies, his parents, teachers, classmates, coach and all others help
him with their Love, company, money, teaching, training, time and knowledge
and so on.

 But when the final exams start the student should put his own effort to get a
good result. Even the dearest friend sitting beside him can’t help.

 This is because all the other people are having their own duty and work
(task).

When the fear of exam starts, the students starting praying to the Lord for
His Blessings and help.

Now they understand that God is the only one who will help in crossing the
difficulties.

GAME - I TO WE – THE REAL JOURNEY

39
GAME - I TO WE – THE REAL JOURNEY RELEVANCE

(AGE GROUP 10-16 YEARS)

Aim:
The aim of this write is to explain the procedure of the game,
motivate group activity and uplift the students mind to make him
understand that he is a part and parcel of God’s creation.

Introduction:
The main theme being adopted is ‘UNITY IN DIVERSITY.’
Some of the factors which contribute towards the unity are co-
operation, harmony, duty, understanding, team work etc.
By playing this game introspection is created in the students mind as
to what are their responsibilities in day to day life towards his family,
neighbours, society, organisation, environment, nation etc.
40
How to proceed:
The teacher chooses words denoting items which are known and
identified by students easily. Items like car, building, school, birthday
party, temple, human body, family, sky etc. can be cited as examples.

One such items is first pronounced by the teacher to the students,

asking them to tell their wish as to the part or the component of the item
which they would like to be. (e.g. for the house the parts are
FOUNDATION, FLOORING, WINDOWS, DOORS, WALLS , ROOF etc.).

 If the number of children is too small for the number of parts involved
then as many rounds as required can be resorted by the teacher. After the
students finish indicating their wishes by covering most of the important
parts of the items, the teacher then finally will say,

 “ALL OF US TOGETHER COLLECTIVELY ARE THE Item concerned

AND WE ARE ALL ONE AND INSEPARABLE FROM THE ITEM” and the
teacher will ask the students to repeat the statement.

41
Contd: I TO WE

This procedure is repeated for few more items with similar concluding
statement by the teacher.

Now the penultimate presented by the teacher to the students for

discussion is NATURE and the students are made to indicate the items
belonging to nature such as sky, earth, clouds, wind, planets, flowers,
animals, etc.

By pronouncing the ultimate word CREATOR (paramatma) the teacher

should wait carefully for the answer from the students.

If after some explanation by the teacher to the students, no proper

answer is forthcoming, it will be brought out that the CREATOR, THE
PARAMATMA is none but the self dwelling in the students and hence they
are part of the supreme SELF which is known as GOD.
Hence by identifying One’s self with the CREATOR it is the responsibility of
the student to protect and respect the nature (created by HIM).

42
Contd: I TO WE
Note:
Whenever an intelligent answer indicating
some of the most vital part of an item is told by
the student the same will be appreciated and
acknowledge by giving claps.

attain wisdom. After attaining wisdom very soon
he will get supreme peace.

The values and its inter connection with one

another in the shloka is to be highlighted by the
Guru.

Faith is the Foundation – Peace is the Result

Faith means it is soul’s energy. It is to open all the secret doors in the universe. It
is that which gives courage to stand and face all the difficulties and disasters. With
What is faith? faith you can become an expert in any field and get an all round development. It
gives the energy to do the great works and become a Sadhaka.
Secondly with faith we should also have full interests or involvement.
Once you start to learn something with faith and continue with full involvement
and automatically you will control the sense organs and attain wisdom or the
knowledge. Once you attain knowledge you will have supreme peace.

As Swamy says

lead the life strength

Practical wisdom: Swami with His students

All of us seated there were simply lost in the beauty of what Swami was telling. Taking the
conversation to a more personal level, Swami began to speak to different students. He asked
Swaminathan Aiyer,
“What is your role in the drama?”
“Swami, I am a soldier.”
“Why are you having such a moustache and beard?”
“Muslim soldier Swami... That is why.”
It was clear that Swami did not like this kind of „stereotyping‟. Immediately, He responded,
“Ay! Why such distinction? Is there anything like a Hindu soldier and a Muslim soldier?
Whatever be the soldier, the soul is one. Soul is fixed and steady.”
Activity
Prepare small chits and write the values from
this shloka (faith, knowledge, wisdom, peace,
spiritual knowledge, material knowledge etc).
Ask each student to take the chit and speak
about the value which he/she gets. Have the
group discussion also about how it is inter
connected with the other values.

Finally the Guru can guide the students about

how can they adopt these values in their daily
life or they can have the group discussion also.

End of knowledge is love

End of culture is perfection
End of wisdom is freedom
End of education is character.

Law of Karma Swami compares with NEWTON’S 3RD LAW OF MOTION

RELEVANCE

When you sow a seed of Karma and whenever it yields the result and
become the fruit, whether it is sweet or bitter, rest assured that you
and you alone will have to eat it, whether you like it or not, and no one
else will be able to eat it on your behalf,

Karma is not a bank account. You deposit Rs.5000/- today, withdraw

Rs.3000/- and the balance is Rs.2000/-, so when you again deposit
Rs.1000/-, it becomes Rs.3000/-. Karma theory is not adding and
subtracting like a bank account. It is `tit for tat, blow for blow, help
for help'. It is same like Newton's 3rd law, `Action and
reaction are always equal and opposite'. Baba
