FOREWORD

Introduction to BP Group Recommended Practices and Specifications for Engineering

The Introductory Volume contains a series of documents that provide an introduction to the
BP Group Recommended Practices and Specifications for Engineering (RPSEs). In
particular, the 'General Foreword' sets out the philosophy of the RPSEs. Other documents in
the Introductory Volume provide general guidance on using the RPSEs and background
information to Engineering Standards in BP. There are also recommendations for specific
definitions and requirements.

Value of this Guidance for Specification

This GUidance for Specification was developed under the BP Exploration XEU Simple
Specifications Initiative. This initiative is intended to simplify the purchasing requirements
through a minimum conditions of satisfaction approach in regions where there is a mature
supplier resource.

Application

This Guidance for Specification is intended to guide the purchaser in the use or creation of a
fit-for-purpose specification for enquiry or purchasing activity.

Text in italics is Commentary. Commentary provides background information which supports

the requirements of the Specification, and may discuss alternative options.

This document may refer to certain local, national or international regulations but the
responsibility to ensure compliance with legislation and any other statutory requirements lies
with the user. The user should adapt or supplement this document to ensure compliance for
the specific application.

Specification Ready for Application

A Specification (BP Spec 106-5) is available which may be suitable for enquiry or purchasing
without modification. It is derived from this BP Group Guidance for Specification by
retaining the technical body unaltered but omitting all commentary, omitting the data page
and inserting a modified Foreword.

Feedback and Further Information

Users are invited to feed back any comments and to detail experiences in the application of
BP RPSE's, to assist in the process of their continuous improvement.

For feedback and further information, please contact Standards Group, BP International or
the Custodian. See Quarterly Status List for contacts.

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Scope

This document specifies the minimum requirements for Painting of

Offshore Packages. It provides guidance on the coatings required for
various applications, and a mandatory colour schedule that has been
included on the grounds of safety.

It is intended for use in conjunction with functional specifications, associated data

sheets and drawings which give specific project requirements.

The manufacturer's standard painting system shall be acceptable to the

purchaser provided his system meets the following minimum
requirements.

1.2 Quality Assurance

Verification of the vendor's quality system is normally part of the pre-qualification

procedure, and is therefore not specified in the core text of this specification. If
this is not the case, clauses should be inserted to require the vendor to operate and
be prepared to demonstrate the quality system to the purchaser. The quality system
should ensure that the technical and QA requirements specified in the enquiry and
purchase documents are applied to all materials, equipment and services provided
by sub-contractors and to any free issue materials.

Further suggestions may be found in the BP Group RPSEs Introductory Volume

2. PAINTING SYSTEMS

2.1 Coating System 1

External carbon steel surfaces, both uninsulated and insulated, which

operate up to 120°C.

Surface Preparation Dry blast clean to Sa 2 1/2

Primer Zinc rich epoxy (minimum 90% metallic

zinc by weight in dry film), 50 microns
d.f.t.

Tie Coat 2 pack epoxy, 35 microns d.f.t.

Intermediate Coats 2 pack epoxy, 2 coats at 100 microns

d.f.t. per coat

Finish Coat 2 pack modified acrylic epoxy, 40

microns d.f.t.

GS 106-5

Total system minimum dry film thickness = 325 microns.

Notes 1: Tie coat can be omitted if overcoating of

primer with an intermediate coat is
carried out within 24 hours.
2: Finish coat can be omitted for insulated
surfaces.

2.2 Coating System 2

External carbon steel surfaces, both uninsulated and insulated, which

operate between 121°C to 350°C.

Surface Preparation Dry grit blast clean to Sa 3

Primer Inorganic zinc silicate, 75 microns d.f.t.

Top Coat Acrylic silicone, 2 coats at 25 microns

d.f.t. per coat.

Total system minimum dry film thickness = 125 microns.

2.3 Coating System 3

External stainless steel surfaces operating up to 120°C under thermal

insulation or operating between 50-120°C with no thermal insulation.

Surface Preparation Solvent degrease and abrade with emery

paper.

Primer Polyurethane epoxy, 50 microns d.f.t.

1st Intermediate Coat 2 pack MIO (Micacous Iron Oxide)

epoxy - 125 microns d.f.t.

2nd Intermediate Coat 2 pack epoxy, 100 microns d.f.t.

Finish Coat 2 pack modified acrylic epoxy, 40

microns.

Total system minimum dry film thickness = 315 microns.

Notes 1: Finish coat can be omitted for insulated surfaces.

2: All paints shall be essentially free from both chlorides

and low melting point metals in any form.

GS 106-5
PAGE 2

3: Duplex stainless steels shall only be coated if operating
above 50°C under thermal insulation.

2.4 Coating System 4

External structural carbon steel surfaces underneath passive

fireproofing (excluding dry insulation).

Surface Preparation Dry grit blast to Sa 2 1/2

Primer Zinc rich epoxy, 50 microns d.f.t.
Tie Coat 2 pack epoxy, 35 microns d.f.t.
Total system minimum dry film thickness = 85 microns.

Notes 1: Primer and tie coat shall be supplied by a paint

manufacturer approved by the fireproofing supplier.

2: To meet the requirements of fireproofing supplier,

the total system dry film thickness shall not exceed
100 microns.

2.5 Coating System 5

Galvanised steel surfaces other than gratings.

Surface Preparation Steam clean/solvent clean to thoroughly

degrease the galvanised surface. Apply
Mordant solution (also known as T-
wash) to lightly etch the surface; it must
not be sprayed).

Intermediate Coat 2 pack MIO epoxy, 100 microns d.f.t.

Finish Coats 2 pack modified acrylic epoxy, 2 coats at

40 microns per coat.

Total system minimum dry film thickness = 180 microns.

2.6 Coating System 6

Galvanised steel grating

Surface Preparation Solvent degrease

Coating Bituminous paint to BS 3416 type,
applied by dipping, 60 microns d.f.t.

3.1 All paints shall be applied in accordance with manufacturer's data

sheets.

3.2 For surface preparation and painting, the ambient temperature shall not
be less than 10°C, the relative humidity shall be less than 85%, and the
metal temperature shall exceed the dew point by more than 3°C.

3.3 Except as indicated above, stainless steel and other corrosion resistant
alloys may be left unpainted unless required for identification purposes.
