Objectives: At the end of the lesson the students will be able to: • Identify the fundamental skills of arnis;

• Appreciate the
benefits of arnis; and • Perform the 12 basic stikes of Arnis.

Fundamental Skills and 12 basic strikes

Arnis • is a Filipino martial art that can be performed individually or with a partner using a single stick or a pair of sticks for
striking and blocking; can also be used for self-defense • It was founded by Remy Presas and he used it as a self-defense
system.

Arnis • also known as kali or eskrima, refers to a category of Filipino martial arts that emphasizes the use of weapons –
whether it be fighting sticks, blades or improvised weapons. In arnis, the weapons are used as an extension of the body.
Thus, some body movement techniques are basic to the sport.

FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS 1. Grip: Proper Hold of the Stick - Hold the stick one fist away from the punyo (butt) of the stick.
Close the grip with the thumb.

FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS 2. Basic Stance and Salutation a. Handa - Feet are positioned shoulder width apart. - Stick is held in
front of the body.

FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS b. Pugay - Place the weapon hand across the chest. - Bow by bending at the waist.

FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS c. Handa sa Paglaban/Fighting Stance - One foot in the front (foot the same as the weapon hand),
the other foot on the rear. - Keep feet apart, distance of one foot. - Both knees slightly bent. - Toes facing forward. -
Weight evenly distributed on both feet.

FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS d. Forward Stance - Distance of 5 steps between the feet. - Back leg kept straight, rear foot is held
at a 45 degree angle. - Keep the front knee bent. - Weight is evenly distributed on both feet.

FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS e. Backward Stance - Distance of 4 steps between the feet. - Both knees are slightly bent. - Rear
foot held at a 90 degree angle.

12 Basic Strikes – Strike 1 - Left temple – Strike 2 -Right temple – Strike 3 -Left shoulder – Strike 4 -Right shoulder – Strike
5 -Stomach/Solar Plexus – Strike 6 -Left Chest – Strike 7 -Right Chest – Strike 8 -Right Knee – Strike 9 -Left Knee – Strike 10
-Left Eye – Strike 11 -Right Eye – Strike 12 -Head/Crown

Activity • The class will be grouped into 4, each group will perform the 12 basic strikes of arnis.

Criteria: Cooperation - 10% Execution - 8% Mastery - 7% Promptness - 5% Total - 30%

EVALUATION Identify the location of the hit body parts of the striking techniques of arnis.

Assignment Search the movements of the following: 1. Single Sinawali 2. Double Sinawali 3. Anyo
