Folk dance is a kind of traditional

symbolic dance that may
describe a culture's history and
traditions. There are several folk
dances in each region of the
Philippines. Each recounts a
historical past, illuminating the
Filipinos’ manner of life in the
earlier times.

Instructions
1. Watch a video of a pangalay dance.
2. Pair up with a classmate.
3. Practice two pangalay movements including shoulder circles, elbow
rotations, and wrist flicks, emphasizing precision and attention to detail.
4. Observe and analyze each movement. Pay attention to the coordination,
fluidity, and expression involved.
5. After sufficient practice, random pairs will present the movements to the
class.
6. The chosen pairs will explain the significance of the dance and
demonstrate how its movements relate to the dance as a whole.
8
Pangalay
Southeast Asia is home to the Philippines. In
the past, the majority of the country’s trade
took place with its neighbors in the south
and southwest, including Indonesia,
Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Malaysia, Laos,
Vietnam, and Cambodia.

These nations have had significant cultural

and religious impact to the country,
especially the southern Philippines.

9
Pangalay

They also left their mark on local dances

from the Philippines, such as the
pangalay.

Pangalay is a social dance of the Tausug

people of Sulu. It is done especially
during weddings and other festive
occasions. In Sabah, it is known as daling-
daling or menggalai.

10
Pangalay

The dance incorporates intricate

shoulder, elbow, and wrist movements
that mimic the movements of the Malay
martial art known as kuntaw silat. This is a
distinctive Asian dance. The performers'
signature long fingernails and traditional
Joloana attire serve as identifiers.

11
Pangalay

The metals that make up

fingernails, including those
composed of silver and gold, are
often possessed by the wealthy.

The term janggay refers to these

lengthy fingernails. The dancers
typically do not have any shoes
on.

12
Pangalay
This dance's music is played
repeatedly, and it can be
performed to a beat of counts
one, two or one, two, and one
measure.

The directions, figure sequence,

number of steps, kind of steps,
hand movements, and body
postures involved in native
dance are all undefined.
13
Pangalay
The dance often contains complex
movement of the shoulders, elbows, and
hands resembling the kuntaw silat acts.
This allows dancers to express their
creativity when designing movements for
the dance.

Both men and women can perform the

traditional dance. A further variation of the
dance performed by popular male dancers
is called pangasik. Male and female
dancers are shown in pangiluk.
14
Pangalay
The pre-Islamic Buddhist
concept of male and female
ethereal angels served as the
foundation for the dance's
original conceptualization. It has
casts that are typical of
Southeast Asian folk dances, like
the vidhyadhari in Sanskrit and
biddadari in Bahasa Sug.

Another Asian-influenced Filipino

traditional dance is sakuting. This
dance is notably influenced by
Chinese culture.
During this communal dance, a
pair of sticks or arnis guide the
dancers’ movements and
produce a rhythmic sound.

20
Sakuting
This indigenous dance has its roots in the
western Cordillera, notably in the provinces
of Abra and Ilocos Norte.

This dance typically appears during the

Christmas season. Children dance as they
ask for presents in their godparents'
homes.

The kids would hit sticks together while Sakuting dance

holding one in each hand. As a result, the
dance is livelier and groovier. Additionally,
it draws the interest of adjacent neighbors.
21
Sakuting

Female dancers dress in traditional

Ilocano kimonos with elbow-length
sleeves and ankle-length plaid skirts that
are shirred at the waist. On the other
hand, male dancers dress in a Camisa de
Chino, red trousers, and local straw hats.

This dance's music has a 2/4 or 3/4 beat.
