Information Theory
Is a highly theoretical study of the efficient use
of bandwidth to propagate information
through electronic communications systems.
Information Capacity
Is a measure of how much information can be
propagated through a communications system
and is a function of bandwidth and transmission
time.
Information Capacity
The number of independent symbols that can be
carried through a system in a given unit of time.
Express as a bit rate (bps)
bps (bits per second)
Hartley’s Law
States that information capacity is directly
proportional to bandwidth and transmission
time of the system.
Mathematically:
B = Bandwidth (Hz)
I = Information Capacity (bits per second)
T = Transmission Time (Seconds)
RALPH HARTLEY
In 1928, He developed a
useful relationship among
bandwidth, transmission
time, and information
capacity in Bell
Telephone Laboratories
Claude E. Shannon
1948, mathematician
(also of Bell Telephone
Laboratories) published a
paper in the Bell System
Technical Journal relating
the information capacity
of a communications
channel to bandwidth
and signal-to-noise ratio.
