Muslim Housing Community: A study on Reinterpreting Traditional Islamic Architecture as a

means for Sustainable Development through Smart Growth Design

ABSTRACT

Islam Culture contains a vast array of beliefs, traditions, and heritage such as in

religion, arts, way of living, up to architecture. According to Philippine Statistics Authority

(PSA), Mindanao houses majority of the Filipino Muslims in the Philippines. With a total of

23.93% of Mindanao’s population rate are Islam in religion and 0.70% resides in Davao

Region. Together with its rising number of populations, discrimination & problems between

Muslim citizens and housing owners are prevalent in Davao City.

In respond to the problem cited above, the proponent proposed a Muslim Housing

Community, integrating the principle of sustainable development in housing communities

using traditional Islamic architecture. The study will focus on enriching the traditional culture

of Islam, such as its way of living, traditions, celebrations, spaces, up to design elements as

an agent towards a sustainable community. Other factors that proponent will deem important

for the study will be considered.

Furthermore, Data gathering including research, case studies, interviews and

surveys will be used to supplement the proposal and provide best solutions for the success

of the proposal. The project aims to reinterpret and enrich the culture of Muslims, promote

sustainable living and combat discrimination among fellow Muslim citizens of the republic.
