CHROMOSOMES: SECTION 1
During cell division, DNA in a eukaryotic cell’s nucleus is coiled into very compact structures
called chromosomes.
Levels: Cell, Coil within chromosome, further coiling within cell, DNA and histones, DNA
double helix
Chromosome: rod-shaped structures made of DNA and proteins
In Eukaryotic cells, DNA wraps tightly around proteins called histones
Nonhistone proteins involved in controlling activity of specific regions of DNA
Chromosome: two identical halves called chromatids
Chromatids form as the DNA makes a copy of itself before cell division
Centromere: point where chromatids attached
Holds two chromatids together until cell division
DNA uncoils in cell division so info can be used to direct activities of the cell
This is called chromatin
Chromosomes simpler in prokaryotes than eukaryotes
Most DNA in prokaryotes has one chromosome, attached to inside of cell membrane.
They consist of a circular DNA molecule
