 Who is FDR?
 Franklin D. Roosevelt
 32nd U.S. President
 Franklin Delano Roosevelt, often referred to by initials FDR, was an
American statesman and political leader who served as the 32nd
president of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945.
 What happened to Pearl Harbor?
 On the morning of 7 December 1941, at 7.55am local time, 183 aircraft
of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the United States Naval base
at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. ... Within two hours, 18
US warships had been sunk or damaged, 188 aircraft destroyed and
2,403 American servicemen and women killed.

 In speech, intonation is the use of changing (rising and falling) vocal
pitch to convey grammatical information or personal attitude. .
 Note the important details to determine the author’s purpose.
 Students will listen to the speech via downloaded audio.
 After listening….
 Do you find the speaker credible?
 What makes you think so?
 What do you think is the emotion projected by FDR during his speech
based on his intonation?
 If you are in FDR’s shoes will you deliver the same speech? Why?
