At the end of discussion, the learners are expected to:

a. Define the word “pliant”;


b. Determine the key message conveyed in the text listened to;

d. Explain how does the bamboo show its pliancy.

B. Motivation

Instruction:

Ask everyone in the class to choose their favorite tree to climb and
describe its characteristics. Relate themselves based on their similarities to the
tree.

C. Presentation/Discussion
Pliant like the Bamboo
There is a story in Philippine folklore about a mango tree and a bamboo tree. Not being
able to agree as to which was stronger of the two, they called upon the wind to make the
decision.

The wind blew hardest. The mango tree stood fast. It would not yield. It knew it was
strong and sturdy. It would not sway. It was too proud. It was too sure of itself. But
finally, its root gave way, and it tumbled down.
The bamboo tree was wiser. It knew it was not as robust as the mango tree. And so, every
time the wind blew, it bent its head gracefully. It made loud protestations, but let the wind
have its way. When finally, the wind got tired of blowing, the bamboo tree still stood in
all its beauty and grace.

 The teacher will read the Reflection story that a Filipino is like a bamboo
tree, to continue the ideas of relating themselves to the story.
D. Application

 Choose which of the two trees in the story will they relate to?
 Would consider yourselves like the bamboo, why or why not?
 Will you agree with the writer’s description of the Filipinos?
 What are the Filipino characteristics that you are proud of?
E. Generalization
Ask the following questions:
 What kind of persons are Filipinos?
 What dominant characteristics of the Filipino are compared to those of a
bamboo?
 What are the similarities between the Filipinos and the bamboo?

IV. Evaluation
Direction: Write (T) if the statement is true or (F) if false. Write your answer on your
note book.
1. The Filipinos cannot be compared to anything.
2. The Filipinos bend and sway just like the bamboo when there are
problems but still remain standing after.
3. The Filipinos are submissive but know when to act or fight.
4. They never learned to fight for their freedom.
5. They are dependent to other races.
6. The Filipinos were once ruled by foreign conquerors.
7. They are easily influenced by other people.
8. They are friendly and good communicators.
9. They can easily adjust to their community and environment.
10. The essay gave us an idea that the Filipino identity is the product of the
influence of other races.
V. Assignment
 Ask your Parent/Guardian a question that if they become a tree, what kind of tree
are they and why.
