Enzymes – Quest for the Most Consequential Device of the Bio-Industry
Enzymes are important as components of industrial processes such as
pharmaceutical and chemical industries. They can be useful in the production of detergents, bread and beer. How? Enzymes help to build up and breakdown. Currently, there’s about 5,400 different classes of enzymes worldwide and became an important part of industrial biotechnology. According to the Association of Enzyme Manufacturers (AMFEP), there are almost 250 enzymes that are commercially available. New enzymes are needed to sustainably discover innovative ways.
However, lab research required in industry is expensive, extremely time-
consuming and subject to restrictions. Current scientific developments use artificial intelligence and data approaches to find new enzymes. On the other hand, computer (in- silico) structural databases of enzyme cavities allow the targeted search for biocatalytic processes. These methods can drastically improve quality and costs of products or the way new therapies are developed.
