Objective:
Evaluation of performance parameter of a SI engine with eddy current
dynamometer at constant speed and variable load

Procedure:
 Initially make sure that the setup is in natural mode like M&N mode of
dynamometer, control panel and hand accelerator
 Start the engine and increase the engine’s rpm to a particular value
(approximately 2000 rpm) with the help of the accelerator
 Slowly turn on the N-mode (constant speed mode) in the control panel and
wait for its activation. Then we observe that the rpm of the engine is
reduced to 1500 rpm and a certain value of Torque appears on the control
panel
 Now take the initial readings of the weight of the fuel and load and wait for
two minutes
 Then take the final reading of the weight of the fuel (to obtain the mass of
the fuel consumed). Rotating the accelerator is supposed to increase the
speed (rpm) of the engine. But eddy current counters this increment, which
in turn results in the increase of load thus, maintaining the speed constant
 Again take the initial readings of the fuel and torque. Readings taken after
two minutes again gives the amount of fuel consumed
 Repeat the above steps until experimental torque and plot the graph
accordingly

Results and conclusion:
Under condition of constant speed and varying load and at a constant air fuel ratio, the bsfc will
rise consistently and rapidly as load is decreased. the reason in rapid decrease in bsfc with the
reduction in load is that the fp(friction power) remains essentially constant, while the
ip(indicated power) is being reduced. As bp=ip-fp, bp drops more rapidly than fuel
consumption, and thereby bsfc rises.
As brake power increase indicated power also increase. ip increase more rapidly than the heat
addition(fuel consumption),thereby efficiency increase.
