EXERCISE # 5

Quality Control

Solve the following problems completely and neatly. Show all your solutions.

1. A quality inspector took five samples, each with four observations, of the length
of time to process loan applications at a credit union. The analyst computed the
mean of each sample and then computed the grand mean. All values are in
minutes. Use this information to obtain control limits for mean control chart and
range control chart of future times. Is the process in control? If not, revise the
control limits.

Sample Number
Observation 1 2 3 4 5
A 12.11 12.15 12.09 12.12 12.09
B 12.10 12.12 12.09 12.10 12.14
C 12.11 12.10 12.11 12.08 12.13
D 12.08 12.11 12.15 12.10 12.12

2. An inspector counted the number of defective monthly billing statements of a

company telephone in each of 20 samples. Using the following information,
construct a control chart that will describe 99.74 percent of the chance variation
in the process when the process is in control. Each sample contained 100
statements. Revise the control limits if necessary.

Sample No. of Defectives Sample No. of Defectives

1 4 11 8
2 10 12 12
3 12 13 9
4 3 14 10
5 9 15 21
6 11 16 10
7 10 17 8
8 22 18 12
9 13 19 10
10 10 20 16

3. Rolls of coiled wire are monitored using a c-chart. Eighteen rolls have been examined,
and the number of defects per roll has been recorded in the following table. Is the
process in control? Construct the c-chart showing the UCL , CL, and LCL.

Sample No. of Defectives Sample No. of Defectives

1 3 10 1
2 2 11 3
3 4 12 4
4 5 13 2
5 1 14 4
6 2 15 2
7 4 16 1
