IDIOM DALAM BAHASA INGGRIS PART 1

1. A basket case = gila. Example: The old man is a total basket case.
2. A blessing in disguise = menjadi berkah. Example: Being fired turned out to be a blessing in
disguise for Kim, because she found a better job.
3. A breath of fresh air = membawa angin segar. Example: The new student, James, is a breath of
fresh air in the class.
4. A change of heart = berubah pikiran, beralih. Example: After seeing a cockroach on the floor, I
had a change of heart about eating at the restaurant.
5. A dead end = jalan buntu. Example: Let’s not take this path, it leads to a dead end.
6. A grey area = kabur, semu, samar-samar. Example: Dina was not exactly sure what all of his
responsibilities, because of a grey area in his job description.
7. A gut feeling = intuisi, firasat. Example: I have a gut feeling that our team will win the
competition.
8. A hot potato = topic hangat. Example: The forest fires is a hot potato recently.
9. A long haul = untuk waktu yang lama, hingga saat terakhir. Example: the son told his father that
he wouldn’t quit. He’s in it for the long haul.
10. A piece of cake = mudah, gampang. Example: The test was a piece of cake for the smartest
student in our class.
11. A rip off = terlalu mahal. Example: Rp. 50.000 for a cup of coffee?! What a rip off?
12. Add insult for injury = yang menyakitkan lagi. Example: Too add insult for injury, Zeron refused
to shake his hand at the meeting.
13. Hit rock bottom = terpuruk. Example: Farel really hit rock bottom after his father passed away.
14. At the drop of a hat = tanpa ragu. Example: Caca took the new job at the drop of a hat.
15. At the fingertips = akses secara langsung. Example: People have a vast amount of information at
the fingertips with the World Wide Web.
16. Back to the drawing board = mulai dari awal. Example: The Indonesian team failed in the AFF.
The manager should go back to the drawing board to prepare the solid team.
17. Barking up the wrong tree = salah tuduh. Example: Umaiza didn’t take your dictionary. You are
barking up the wrong tree.
18. Be a pain in the neck = menjengkelkan. Example: My young sister is a real pain in the neck
sometimes.
19. Be child’s play = sangat mudah. Example: The test was child’s play for me, because I get big
score.
20. Be in the hot water = dalam masalah. Example: Evelyn was in hot water over forgetting her
boyfriend.
