WHAT IS AN EXPANSION JOINT ?
An expansion joint is an empty space, free of any material
between two parts of a structure designed to safely absorb
thermal expansion and contraction of building structures,
to absorb vibration or to allow horizontal, vertical or shear
movement due to soil settlement or seismic activity.

FRANCE AND WORLD SEISMICITY

FRANCE SEISMICITY
An earthquake is the result of a sudden
release of energy in the Earth’s crust that
creates seismic waves. Though we
cannot prevent an earthquake from occuring,
measures can be taken to minimize
consequences. In order to reduce the number
of victims, buildings and other structures
must be designed or modified to improve
their resistance to earthquakes.

Eurocodes : new european regulation

Eurocodes is a set of european standards

about the specifications of structural design
for the construction of buildings and other
infrastructures.
They are developped by the European Com-
mittee for Standardization. Chapter 8 defines
the design and specifications of structures for

‘‘ earthquake resistance.

‘‘
Earthquakes may create major building
disasters, with Veda France,
precaution can be taken.
