BECAK
Becak is a tricycle pedaled by a man who sits normally behind the passenger. It could seat
two persons, however, rather tightly. Becaks mostly found in cities and town in Java and
have been here for over four decades.

Unfortunately, this means of transportation is gradually disappearing in the big cities as


motorized transportation has rapidly taken over public transportation everywhere in the
country. In Jakarta, it has practically disappeared altogether, but they can still be found in the
faraway suburbs where streets are narrow , and other public transportation is rare.

I other cities like Bandung, Surabaya, Semarang and Denpasar they can still be used for short
distances. Before stepping into a becak, make sure you have bargained before with the driver
for the agreed upon fare (usually between Rp. 5.000,- and Rp. 10.000,-).

The National Monument (Indonesian: Monumen Nasional, popularly abbreviated as Monas)


is a 132 m Tower in the centre of Merdeka Square, symbolizing the fight of Indonesia. The
monument consists of a 117.7 m obelisk on a 45 m square platform and a height 17 m.

to all areas. A small elevator that can accommodate up to fifty people brings visitors to
observation deck at the top. It offers a good vantage point at an elevation of 115 meters
above the ground level. Several viewing binoculars are also provided for visitors so they can
see interesting sight around the park.
