Abstract — A multilayer dual-band coupler, based on the

composite right/left-handed (CRLH) folded substrate integrated
waveguide (FSIW) transmission line (TL), is proposed and
investigated. The characterization of the CRLH FSIW and the
coupling method are performed to realize a 3 dB coupler with
compact size. For verification, a dual-band coupler operating at
2.4 GHz/3.8 GHz is designed, fabricated and measured. The
simulated and measured results are shown reasonable
agreements.

I. INTRODUCTION
In recent years, substrate integrated waveguide (SIW)
structure, which has the advantages of low cost, low profile,
high Q, and good compatibility with planar structures, etc.,
has been extensively investigated and successfully applied to
the design of various kinds of microwave and millimeter-wave (b) Top view

For this reason, an improved waveguide structure, folded SIW
(FSIW) has been introduced and its characteristics have been II. CHARACTERIZATION OF CRLH FSIW

simulated S-parameters of the CRLH FSIW are obtained by
using Ansoft’s High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS).
The elements of the equivalent circuit are extracted by fitting
the simulated data via Agilent’s Advanced Design System
(ADS). The parameter values of the unit-cell and the circuit
are listed in the caption. It can be seen that the two curves are
fitting to each other very well.

dimension. It is found that the first passband is mainly
determined by the interdigital slots, such as the width w3, the
distance w4 and the length l3, the second passband is mainly
determined by the width ws of FSIW. When w3 increases, the
first center frequency (f1) will increase significantly and the
second center frequency (f2) will decrease smoothly, as shown
in Fig. 3(a). However, Fig. 3(b) shows that the two
frequencies vary little with changing w4. And we can see f1
and f2 will both decrease as l3 increases from Fig. 3(c).

Furthermore, as Fig. 3(d) shows, ws plays an important role on

IV. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS
A dual-band coupler operating at 2.4 GHz/3.8 GHz is
fabricated and measured for verification. The substrate is
Rogers RO4350B with εr = 3.48, thickness h = 0.762 mm. All
the metallic vias have a diameter d = 1 mm and a center to
center spacing p = 2 mm. The photograph of the fabricated
coupler is shown in Fig. 6 with the design parameters list
below. The dimension is 100 mm × 25 mm × 3.9 mm.
Fig. 7 presents the frequency responses of the simulation
and measurement results. The performances in both passbands
are summarized in Table I. Reasonable agreements are
obtained. The first center frequency is located at 2.40 GHz

insertion loss of the through and coupling ports is 4.06 dB and

coupler can be summarized as follows.
1) Choose the center frequencies (f1 and f2) of two
passbands.
2) Parameters ws and g are selected with the
predetermined dielectric of the standard PCB
technology. The value of ws should be determined
according to the second center frequency.
3) With desired first center frequency and Fig. 3, we can
select the initial values of w3, w4 and l3, and Change
them to adjust the first center frequency with little
impact on the second one.
4) Using (1), (2), (3) and (4) or Fig. 5 to obtain the values
of w, l and slot for arbitrary coupling ratio.
5) Finally, the coupler structure is further optimized to
meet the specifications using commercial software (a) First passband of simulation.
