Panji's Mask

Panji story is tell about a character the named Panji Inu Kertapati who searched his love, Dewi
Candra Kirana. Panji’s story originally come from Smaradahana written by Empu Dharmaja in Kediri,
East Java. Panji’s story then developed to be a puppet show art of Panji’s Mask.

The story of Panji in the heyday, make Javanese society’s so proud and very popular until all
archipelago, to outside of Indonesia. But now, the Panji’s Mask art is almost lost. Its very sad if now,
the society don’t know the story or performances the Panji’s Mask art. Therefore, as the cultural
heritage of Panji’s Mask art should be explored and developed again.

One way, must to our do for Panji’s Mask art always there in the middle society, must be do
preservation, rescue, and maintenance. This efforts should be involving all parties, starting with
increase of appreciation until pass the process of continue education. This step, begin with held the
stages of Panji’s Mask to return introduce.

With the purpose for preseve the curtural heritage of Panji’s Mask Art that, the IIMF themed “The
Greatest Panji” at 14-15 September in Benteng Vastenburg and Surakarta’s Institute Indonesian Arts
was held to promote the mask performance art while increase the society appreciation of mask
performance art, the crafts of mask, and mask themed film. This event present the shows traditional
and contemporary mask dance performances from domestic and foreign delegations, there are
Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore.
