NARRATIVE REPORT CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

SAN MIGUEL CORPORATION
(COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT)

San Miguel Corporation is known to be the company who knows how to give back to the
people supporting them. They have an organization named Team Malasakit who came from
the different group of companies under San Miguel Corporation which consists of Bank of
Commerce, Corporate Servies Units of SMC, ARCHEN Technologies, Petron Corporation,
SMC Infrastracture, SMC Prosync, SMITS, Ginebra San Miguel, San Miguel Beer, Purefoods,
SMYPC, and SMC Global Power. It was established in 2015 and currently has 4,000-strong
employee volunteers. They advocate for the people’s Health and Nutrition, Environment,
Disaster and Response Rehabilitation, and Livelihood.

As I go through my report, I realized that SMC is one of the leading companies in the
Philippines which actively participates in different community extension services. In terms of
Environment, their aim is to offset carbon emissions produced by SMC Operations to support
DENR’s National Greening Program. Given the fact that SMC has a lot of companies that
produce smoke, they made such project that will somehow cover up the carbon emissions they
usually produce. The health and nutrition program of SMC focuses on reducing the
vulnerabilities of children to malnutrition, improving access to health services and improving
sanitation and hygiene practices in partner communities. On the other hand, livelihood
program provides opportunities to underprivileged families in partner communities through
establishing small scale businesses and other means of livelihood. Lastly under the community
development is the Disaster and rehabilitation program of SMC which offers relief efforts during
disasters, as well as rehabilitation efforts for affected families including repair and construction
of houses and facilities.

Malasakit is a Filipino value we ought to practice in the workplace. As business

professionals, it just right to give back to the people who needs it. “Your pain is my pain”, SMC
says, meaning, they are with their fellowmen through thick and thin. They have proven it
through the CSR Programs they facilitate to help.

NARRATIVE REPORT
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
(COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND ACCOUNTANCY)

Every department that consists University of Batangas has their own version of
Corporate Social Responsibility. In the case of my very own department, College of Business
and Accountancy, we divide the responsibility within the student organizations under it. We
have the JPAMA, JPIA, JMA, ASPOF, JBMA, and the HRDM, each one of them has their
chosen community that corresponds to the latter’s needs. The faculty members are very
supportive of the activities they make to help others.

The latest CSR of the department was in partnership with the JPAMA and the JMA,
Management Accounting and Marketing Management students respectively. They went to their
adopted barangay and they conducted a branding and logo seminar. The objective of the
activity was to give awareness to the people who aims to enter the business world. They were
taught of different livelihood programs that will surely be of big help to them.

Another activity hosted by the department was the training of basic accounting to the
adopted barangay. It is not enough that you just know how to sell things, it is also important
that they learn how to compute their revenues in the correct manner which will make them
motivated of the business that they will be entering.

Corporate Social Responsibility is an important matter which needs to be given attention

of. I always believe in the saying that it is better to give than to receive because it is in giving
that we receive.

PROPOSAL

INTRODUCTION

The Badjaos are a Filipino Muslim ethnic sea gypsies and group of boat dwellers people. They
originated from Zamboanga, Basilan, Jolo provinces, Tawitawi in the Sulu Archipelago in Mindanao,
Philippines. They are called Samal Luwaan (outcast) or Samal Laud (people of the ocean) and whose
religion is ancestor worship mixed with Islamic influences.

The Badjaos are an oppressed tribe. They are referred to as Palao or Lumaan (God forsaken) by
the Tausugs. They are the poorest ethnic group in Sulu depending only on fishing with arrow and diving
coins tossed by ship passengers at the port, exchanging corals, sea shells or pearl for any food or money
for their daily food and survival. They have no permanent dwellings and live on their boats throughout
the year but in some places the Badjaos have built their own houses.

On December 14, 1999, an independent missionary couple was sent by GOD to live and minister
to this outcast Muslim tribe. Pastor Albert Santiago handles the community development, livelihood,
literacy, cleanliness, sanitation and peace and order. His wife, Ellen, ministers to the the medical needs
of the community, clothing, health and care of mothers and children, especially the malnourished
children. They both seek the help and assistance of their Christian friends for medicine, clothing, food
and vitamins. They invited Christian doctors, nurses, dentists, nutritionists and many spent their own
money to support the extreme needs of the impoverished Badjao community.

PURPOSE/ OBJECTIVE:

The primary reason of conducting this outreach activity is to give the badjao community a
Christmas treat that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
