General Safety Rules
5. Tie back long hair. Dangling hair can fall
into the Bunsen burner and catch fire or
can fall into a chemical solution
6. Roll up loose sleeves. Loose clothing
should not be worn because it may dip
into chemicals or fall into a flame and
catch fire
7. Wear shoes that cover your feet. Sandals
and open-toed shoes do not protect your
feet from broken glass and chemical spill
1. Listen to or read instructions carefully before
attempting to do anything.
2. Wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from
chemicals, heated materials, or things that might
be able to shatter.
3. Precaution should be observed in cleaning table
tops especially when there are liquid spills which
could possibly be acids or bases.
4. After handling chemicals, always wash your hands
with soap and water.

8. Know the location of the fire extinguisher, safety
shower, eyewash station, and first aid kit.
9. Refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and
playing inside the laboratory.
10. Do not taste any chemical!
11. Never “horse around” or play practical jokes in
the laboratory.

12. Chipped or cracked glassware should not be used.

13. Broken glassware should not be disposed of in a
classroom trashcan. There is a special glass
disposal container for it.
14. Do not place hot glassware in water. Rapid
cooling may make it shatter.
15. Unauthorized experiments should not
be performed.

 Read the labels in the reagent bottles carefully. Take

prescribed amount; do not bring the reagent bottle to
the desk; NEVER return any chemical to reagent
bottles, unless specifically directed to do so;

 Maintain purity of the chemicals by using specific

pipettes or spatula for each bottle;

 Clean off the outside of the reagent bottle of dust,

ammonium chloride, or other contaminants; rinse
neck and stopper with water and wipe dry before
removing the stopper

 Shake the bottle to loosen contents before

opening, do not shake as you pour.

 Place a stirring rod

against the lip of the
container
 It should touch the
inside wall of the receiving
container
 Tilt the bottle so that the
liquid flows down the rod
into the receiving
container; clean off any
liquid outside the bottle

medicine dropper,
hold the loaded
dropper above the
mouth if the test
tube; do not insert
it into the test tube

Heat test tubes at an angle,

directing the opening
oppositely to you and other
people in the laboratory.
Pour ACID slowly into
WATER while stirring.
Never pour WATER
into ACID!!!

 Volumetric transfer pipets are designed to deliver a

single fixed volume of liquid.
 Never use mouth suction to fill a pipet
 Slip off the bulb, and with the forefinger, quickly
seal the tip of the pipet before the solution drops
below the calibration mark
