Assignment Exercises – II

1. A synchronous generator and a synchronous motor each rated 25 MVA, 11 kV having 15 %

subtransient reactance are connected through transformers and a line as shown in Fig. 1. The
transformers are rated 25 MVA, 11/66 kV and 66/11 kV with leakage reactance of 10 % each. The
line has a reactance of 10 % on a base of 25 MVA, 66 kV. The motor is drawing 15 MW at 0.8
power factor leading and a terminal voltage of 10.6 kV when a symmetrical three-phase fault
occurs at the motor terminals. Find the subtransient current in the generator, motor and fault.

2. A 25 MVA, 11 kV three phase generator has a subtransient reactance of 20 %. The generator
supplies two motors over a transmission line with transformers at both ends as shown in the one-
line diagram of Fig. 2. The motors have rated inputs of 15 and 7.5 MVA, both 10 kV with 25 %
subtransient reactance. The three-phase transformers are both rated 30 MVA, 10.8/121 kV,
connection delta-star with leakage reactance of 10 % each. The series reactance of the line is 100
ohms. Draw the positive and negative sequence networks of the system with reactance marked in
per unit. Assume that the negative sequence reactance of each machine is equal to its subtransient
reactance. Omit resistances. Select generator rating as base in the generator circuit.

3. The positive sequence reactance’s for the power system shown in Fig. 3 are in per unit on a
common MVA base. Resistances are neglected and the negative sequence impedances are assumed
to be the same as the positive sequence impedances. A bolted line to line fault occurs between
phases b and c at bus 2. Before the fault occurrence, all bus voltages are 1.0 per unit. Determine
the fault current.

4. Consider two mutually coupled transmission line is shown in Fig. 4. The system nominal
voltage is 13.8 kV. The positive and zero sequence impedances are given in the figure. The
zero sequence impedances are given in parentheses. Find the apparent impedance seen by the
relay R1 for phase A to ground fault at F.

5. Consider the system shown in Fig. 5. Assume that the relative magnitudes of I1, I2 and I3 remain
unchanged for any fault on the system between the buses A through G. Determine the settings
for the three-zones of relay Rb. Remember to take into account the effect of the infeed for
determining the zones 2 and 3 settings, while no infeeds are to be considered for the zone 1
settings. (assume I2/I1=0.5).
