India Literacy Project Science Kit

Experiential learning has been one of the key foundations of ILP’s MDLS program. Learning
science through hands on experiments has been one of the key components and goal has
always been to ensure that learning science is simple, fun, inexpensive and involves items
that you come across in your daily life (not all specialized). With that background in mind,
we have created a comprehensive Science kit that covers about 200+ concepts from 5 th to
10th grade across Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

The current version of the kit was developed with feedback from teachers who used our kit
and from teachers nominated by DSERT or HKRDB.

Salient Features of ILP’s Science kit

Criteria Details

Cost ILP’s science kit has been built using low cost components that
are mostly available even in Rural India. The familiarity of the
components will help children relate to science as a natural day
to day thing, instead of something to be done in the Lab.

Availability of items in Most of the components used in the kit is not specialized and
Rural India hence easily replenishable even in remote schools.

Relevance to syllabus All experiments are mapped to Karnataka State syllabus and
hence very relevant to the syllabus

Collaboration with DSERT The kit has been used by teachers over 3+ years and has gone
through 2 revisions. This is the 3rd version of our kit and it
includes all the feedback from teachers. The instruction and
concept videos has been created along with the DSERT team

Approach (No readymade The Science Kit consists of everyday items along with some
models) specialized components that encourage children to tinker and
build new applications of the concepts they learn, as opposed to
assembling ready-made models. Most components are available
in small towns and can be replenished easily at a low cost, thus
allowing children to touch, feel and build without fear of
breaking expensive items.

Step by Step Manual A detailed manual containing items required, concept note, and
experiment set up is provided as part of the kit. This is available
both in Kannada and English
Conceptual and Videos have been created for each experiment along with
Instructional Videos DSERT and is available both in Kannada and English. Videos not
only provide step by step instruction, but also explains the
concepts.

Supplementary Digital ILP has created Digital content to teach concepts for all the
Content chapters in Science from 4th to 10th grade. This content, which is
in Powerpoint and compliments the science kit will be available
along with the kit

Training and Hand holding ILP has developed an effective training program that we have
used to train more than 1000+ teachers. We will provide training
on how to use the kit and how to encourage students to explore
science experientially. We can also provide resources who will
periodically visit schools and drive adoption of the science kits.
