APPROACHES,

METHODS AND
STARTEGIES IN
TEACHING PHE
APPROACH
An approach is a way of looking at teaching and learning.

It is a theoretical view of what language is, and of how it can be

learnt.

An approach gives rise to methods, the way of teaching

something, which use classroom activities or techniques to help
learners learn.
TYPES OF TEACHING
APPROACH
TEACHER CENTERED APPROACH

The teacher is perceived to be the only reliable source of

information in contrast to the learner-centered approach
TYPES OF TEACHING
APPROACH
LEARNER CENTERED APPROACH

In which it is premised on the belief that the learner is

also important resource because he/she too knows
something and is therefore capable of sharing something.
TYPES OF TEACHING
APPROACH
SUBJECT MATTERED APPROACH

Subject matter gains primacy over that of the learner.

TYPES OF TEACHING
APPROACH
TEACHER DOMINATED APPROACH

In this approach, only the teacher’s voice is heard.

He/she is the sole dispenser of information.
TYPES OF TEACHING
APPROACH
INTERACTIVE APPROACH

In this approach, an interactive classroom gives students

opportunities to talk than the teachers. Students are given
opportunities to interact with teacher and other students.
TYPES OF TEACHING
APPROACH
INTEGRATED APPROACH

It makes the teacher connects what he/she teaches to

other lessons of the same subject (interdisciplinary) or
connects his/her lessons with other subjects thus making
his/her approach interdisciplinary and multi- disciplinary
TYPES OF TEACHING
APPROACH
INDIVIDUALISTIC APPROACH

It wants the individuals to work by themselves.

TEACHING METHOD

LECTURE

is a process of teaching whereby the teacher tells the

students his planned facts. The students listen and take
notes. It is one of the oldest methods in use. The success
of this method depends on the ability of the teacher to
speak fluently in good tone and style.
TEACHING METHOD
REPORTING METHOD

Aims to provide students with information in a direct way

and in uninterrupted manner.

The student-reporter act like an authority of the topics

assigned to them
TEACHING METHOD
SELF-PACING METHOD

Students can learn in their own time and schedule

TEACHING STRATEGY
A method of approaching the task of teaching, mode of
operation to achieve a goal

Requires some sort of planning

TEACHING STRATEGY
RECIPROCAL LEARNING

 is an instructional model in which students work in pairs

to master lesson content. They cooperate in well-defined
roles of doer and observer (i.e., tutor and tutee) to
maximize their own and each other's learning.
TEACHING STRATEGY
JIGSAW LEARNING

 The jigsaw technique is a method of organizing classroom

activity that makes students dependent on each other to
succeed.

It breaks classes into groups and breaks assignments into

pieces that the group assembles to complete the (jigsaw) puzzle.
TEACHING STRATEGY
ROLE PLAYING

is a technique that allows students to explore realistic

situations by interacting with other people in a managed way in
order to develop experience and trial different strategies in a
supported environment
TEACHING STRATEGY
ROLE PLAYING

opposing positions on a topic or question in an attempt to
make an audience (or the other advocates) accept their
position.
TEACHING TECHNIQUE

A teacher’s personal style or trick to accomplish the task of

teaching.
TEACHING STYLE
COMMAND/AUTOCRATIC STYLE

Didactic style where the teacher makes all the decisions, it is

often described as teacher-directed and autocratic. Students
respond immediately to the stimulus or model provided by the
teacher.
TEACHING STYLE
COACH/DEMONSTRATOR STYLE

It is similar to the authority style.

 During classroom teaching, a teacher might involve multimedia presentations or

demonstrate the skills in front of the class.

. This teaching style is advisable for subjects like music, science, PE, where you can
give a full comprehension of a topic only by demonstrating.

This teaching style also limits communication between the demonstrator and student.
TEACHING STYLE
FACILITATOR STYLE

 student-centered teaching approach to learning and promoted

critical thinking skills.

The primary job of the facilitator is to coach and facilitate and

also energize the active learning proceedings by building a
suitable logical and emotional environment in the classroom.
