“Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.”

- Plato

“Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force
constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively using words of despair. Words have energy
and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble.”

- Yehuda Berg

PREFACE

Communication is prevailing; it changes along with the course of the

wind. In the nature of human and society, there is always communication
daily, hourly, minutely, even secondly. Now, why is there a need to study
communication? Is it not a natural instinct and capacity that can be learned
eventually? Well, it could be, but as for its purpose and other factors in
consideration, it is not. And with the medium of instruction and the global need
for understanding people and one another – we are going to deal with it.

In this module, we are going to enhance not just our communication

skills but the macro and higher order thinking skills as well. We are going to
study in integrative state concerning the arising needs for the students’ skills
and knowledge to be developed and known. Thus, we will cover: Promoting
Social Interactions Using the Communication Processes, Molding Values and
Diversity Awareness through Peace Education, Exploring Ideas in the 21st
Century Education, Understanding Progress through Communication and
Technology, Achieving Analytical Thinking through Research and Extension,
Expressing Oneness with Socialization in the Environment.
As the module states, we need to enhance our competencies to meet
the global needs and not just settle for mediocrity. In order to become 21st
century learners and be equipped with the skills not just in the cognitive but
with the consideration of affective as well. For, indeed, beauty competency lies
not just on how skillful we are – it is about how good we are in expressing and
dealing with others in using our skills that could benefit society.

Importance of Communication

UK Essays

Communication is very important for all beings. Animals and humans, alike, use their own
decoupled languages to communicate with one another, because no one can survive without
communicating. Communication skills are a part of the spoken and written language. These are the
superfluous factors, which complete a communication process.

Communication refers to the exchange of thoughts and ideas with the intention of conveying
information. Communication is a two way street that includes vocalization as well as gesticulation. The
purpose of communication is to convey one’s beliefs, ideas, thoughts or needs with clarity so as to reach a
consensus or a mutually acceptable solution.

The importance of communication skills cannot be underestimated. It has been known, that long
before when language was yet to be invented, people used hand gestures, body language etc. to converse
with one another. Good communication skills are necessary in all walks of life. The lack of effective
communication skills has a negative impact on the personal as well as professional life of a person.

Good communication skills are a prerequisite for professionals, in all walks of life. For example:

A teacher, who is able to communicate well with students, can inspire them to learn and
participate in class. Workplace communication can be improved by participating in a facilitated workshop.
A workshop facilitator needs to be able to communicate. Without effective communication, even the goal
of workshop facilitation cannot be realized. The facilitator needs to be able to identity dormant
participants and encourage them to come forth with their views without seeming overly patronizing. All
this is impossible unless the facilitator has astounding communication abilities coupled with a natural
empathy towards fellow beings.

 Comprehension Check!

Let’s explore!

In this phase, the students will be able to think and know more about the topic and

An Excerpt from “Peace in Mindanao”

The country's struggle for freedom and democracy has been marked by violence and conflict,
resulting in considerable loss of lives and property. On the positive side, it has given the people strength
and clarity of vision to continue to preserve their democratic gains.

The search for national peace has been a lifelong goal of us, the Filipinos. Is it really impossible to
have national peace? There are a series of reasons why this "peace" thing seems very unattainable to us.
First let us look at our current situation here in the Philippines. Conflicts still flourish up to this day, violent
as ever. Killings persist, kidnappings endure. These scenes are already familiar to us since the Marcos
regime. That's why the Filipinos start to think that this goal is becoming more of a dream, a dream that
seem unattainable. As you can see, even in our current situation, the Filipinos are becoming more and
more hopeless of being able to attain this national peace. Even though there are numerous attempts to
attain this, they all remain useless. Instead of Filipinos becoming one, they began parting their own ways.
They even start fighting with each other, or even kill each other, which is not a Filipino must do to his own
countrymen.

The peace movement started as a struggle against exploitation, inequalities in the distribution of
resources and violation of human rights. Over the years, the advocacy of people's organizations provided
the impetus in awakening general consciousness. To a large extent they have helped shape the direction of
government's initiatives in future peace processes.
11
The celebration of the country's Centennial of the revolution against Spain has brought into focus
history's accounts of armed conflict and a growing recognition of the need to emphasize peaceful struggles.

 The teacher will read an essay and the students will listen in order to comprehend
and answer the questions that follow. In a group, there will be random questions
wherein each group should be able to pick a representative to explain their
answers.

 From Child to Adulthood

Primetime Essay
Little girls dream of becoming princesses, boys - on becoming heroes, but once we all
start to grow up, we realize how different life is from the way we imagined it when we were five.
Every child has an idea, a dream of how his or her life is going to turn out, when they play house
or cops and swordsmen, they see those things as the truth; their future.

Children also don’t worry about getting to work or how much money they have in their
pockets. Teenagers and adults are the exact opposite; they worry and care too much about
everything. They worry about what everybody around thinks about them, and money is always
on their minds. Adults care about the car that is in their driveway and what kind of house they
live in. To children none of that matters. The day of a child is reasonably simple, they get up, put
clothes on that have previously been chosen for them and most of the time eat breakfast and go
to preschool or daycare. They play with their friends, eat a snack, and take a nap.

 Comprehension Check!

 What is the essay all about? Why is the transition of maturity important?

transmuted as a productive member of a civilized society by acquiring all the necessary skills. We learn
how to meet challenges and overcome obstacles. We learn how to become an integrated personality and

work hard you can achieve anything.

And these skills? They are anchored with creativity, critical thinking, communication, and

To think that I’ve got a cell phone, e-mail, and voice mail; I am still subject to ask why am I
so lonely? A funny thing happened on the way to the communications revolution: we stopped
talking to one another. I was walking in the park with a friend recently, and his cell phone rang,
interrupting our conversation. There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and–
poof!–I became invisible, absent from the conversation. The park was filled with people talking
on their cell phones. They were passing other people without looking at them, saying hello,
noticing their babies or stopping to pet their puppies.

Evidently, the untethered electronic voice is preferable to human contact. The telephone used
to connect you to the absent. Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent. Recently I was
in a car with three friends. The driver shushed the rest of us because he could not hear the
person on the other end of his cell phone. There we were, four friends zooming down the
highway, unable to talk to one another because of a gadget designed to make communication
easier.

Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in
communications technology is a setback to the intimacy of human interaction. With e-mail and
instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one
another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If
my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine.

As almost every conceivable contact between human beings gets automated, the alienation
index goes up. You can’t even call a person to get the phone number of another person anymore.
Directory assistance is almost always fully automated. Pumping gas at the station? Why say
good-morning to the attendant when you can swipe your credit card at the pump and save
yourself the bother of human contact?

scenarios which give them the opportunity to relate, express and make their learning

Let’s put things into practice!

Write a reaction paper about the following excerpts from Sherry Turkle’s “Flight from
Task 1 Conversation.”

1. We are tempted to think that our little “sips” of online connection add up to a big gulp of real
conversation. But they don’t. E-mail, Twitter, Facebook, all of these have their places — in
politics, commerce, romance and friendship. But no matter how valuable, they do not substitute
for conversation.
2. FACE-TO-FACE conversation unfolds slowly. It teaches patience. When we communicate on our
digital devices, we learn different habits. As we ramp up the volume and velocity of online
connections, we start to expect faster answers. To get these, we ask one another simpler
questions; we dumb down our communications, even on the most important matters. It is as
though we have all put ourselves on cable news. Shakespeare might have said, “We are
consum’d with that which we were nourish’d by.”
3. WE expect more from technology and less from one another and seem increasingly drawn to
technologies that provide the illusion of companionship without the demands of relationship.
Always-on/always-on-you devices provide three powerful fantasies: that we will always be
heard; that we can put our attention wherever we want it to be; and that we never have to be
alone. Indeed our new devices have turned being alone into a problem that can be solved.

 Six Steps to Success

Ontario Human Rights Commission

In life, there is always uncertainty. There is always a dilemma, yet if we overcome those things, we
could go on for a sunny and bright path. Amidst the spreading and hearing of the negativities and falsities,
here we are to suggest what steps to take:

The first step is to identify issues and/or opportunities for collecting data and to decide what next
steps to take.

 The second step is to select issue/s and/or opportunities and set goals.
 The third step is to plan the appropriate approaches and methods.
 Next step is to collect data.
 Step 5 is to analyze and collect data.
 Lastly, act on results.

If you deal with things following these considerations, success indeed lies ahead if we try to avoid
quick and harsh decisions.
